My RS2 makes a strange moaning noise at around the 3000rpm mark. It sounds like some sort of resonance; any ideas what might be the cause.... and cure?
Cheers
Moaning!?

RE: Moaning!?
Can you tell where is the sound coming from?
If the sound generally happens when at constant speeds and the noise varies as you turn the steering wheel or temporarily goes when you gently dab the brakes, it may be a wheel bearing on the way out or it may be a bit of plate lift due to corrosion on the calipers (very common), pushing the brake pad onto the disk.
In my case the moaning was a combination of the two. I replaced the front calipers with big reds as well as the rear calipers (although I could have refurbished the old calipers) but the moaning came back a month later at which point I replaced the front wheel bearings which cured the problem.

I wish I did know.....front RHS is as good as I can guess....but you're right, it only happens when I'm on the move.AAH! wrote:Can you tell where is the sound coming from?

My first thought was wheel bearing, but I got steered away* from that as they were all renewed last December.
I think I'd better look in that area again.
Thanks for the info
John
PS Doesn't happen when lady is in car. It's a left hooker*, so more of a scream than a moan!
* Both unintended puns!
Re: RE: Moaning!?
In that case have a look at the calipers and see if there is any plate lift (see photo). If so this may well be the cause.B300ABT wrote:I wish I did know.....front RHS is as good as I can guess....but you're right, it only happens when I'm on the move.

Also when I had my wheel bearing replaced the M16 stretch bolts were not tightened to the correct torque (200nm + 90º) and as a result they loosened, which again caused the moan to come back a new set of bolts cured it. NB If your bolts have loosened you can not retighten the old ones and therefore would need new set of bolts. (£3.50 each)

Interesting stuff Angus - much appreciated.
I've been going through the paperwork that came with the car and as I was assured, pretty much anything that needed to be done has been done within the past year, including wheel bearings, stripped and rebuilt calipers - and the turbo wastegate!
Hope to get to see company that did this work next week.
Thanks again.
