Hi All,
more advise please?
When my pertrol tank is full the gauge reads spot on until it reaches approximately half a tank, at this point the gauge drops to nothing and will vary from that back to correct levels, depending on going up,down hills, round bends etc.

Can anyone enlighten me to what the fault is, and how to fix it?

i had exactly the same problem..........nothing to do with calibration thoug.....
well i'll try to explain it.......please understand that i'm italian......
inside the tank fuel there's the trasmitter for the gauge something with a floating part that converts the phisical content into an electric/electronic message.........
so a plastic floating cilinder connected via a metal arm to a couple of copper tracks the contacts of the wires will by sliding on the tracks give the reading for the gauge..........(hope what i wrote will mean something.......)
connections between the firm part (copper tracks) and the moving arm are made by two copper wires (no plastic around so bare copper)
the problem in my RS2 where that one of the wires was simply broken probably weared by years of moving up and down.......
Be aware tha Audi supplies (as usual) the complete mechanism few hundreds euros........where with some patience and a piece of bare copper wire and a soldering tool it will cost just the time........
please be careful in using the soldering tool faraway from the fuel tank

the reason you have sometimes the proper reading is that while driving the two parts of the broken wire come to contact by chance....

How easy is it to get to the sender unit? Is it like my old 928 and removable via the boot, or am I required to drop the tank?

No it's not so bad.......from the boot........plastic ring to be unscrew..........and that's it if i remember well
