Considering a RS2

Post by Plums » Sun Apr 30, 2006 12:27 pm

Hi everyone,

Well here's the thing I've always loved the RS2 but was kind of put off by the price (several years ago)..... that was until the other day when flicking through my local newspaper see one advertised at my local Audi garage for not much more money than a new Micra!!!!

Here's the details.....

Audi RS2 regusa green
1995 138,000 kms FSH bodywork spotless

Now I already have 2 cars and one of them brand new Honda Tourer Type-S I just bought 6 months ago and a Mitsubishi for the wife!
Before that I a Sub STI 2003... before that Carlos Sainz Celica.... etc..

Now my question is... can you use a RS2 as a daily driver (50% of my driving is town) or will it be a pain in the a..RS..e?

Cheers,

Plums...

Hello and welcome to the RS community,
you can use the RS2 as a daily driver although it is not recommended not because it gets worn more quickly, but mainly because you dont get adavantage of the car's abilities and it gets heated up with no real reason while driving around in traffic.
The car can be easily driven below the 3000rpm mark without the use of the turbo spooling up,thus giving you the driving pleausre of a 150hp car in town, while you can drive faster in highways.

As for service and maintanence, well since it is used,it may definitelly need some attention in the beggining for a thorough check of the turbo, the hoses, cooling system, intercooler, oil changes, noises, cambelt, bushes, top mounts and shocks.Oil consumption is normal for this car up to 1litr. per 1000kms according to audi, but well preserved cars or rebuild engined cars dont consume at all. After that only thing you need to worry about is the miles to the gallon, where you will find that you have the possibility of being gentle to the car and your pocket, while you can also be aggressive to both and bring a big smile to your face(from time to time...)!

cheers

I use mine in town more than 50% of the time and I have no issues what so ever (apart from getting 14-16mpg). You can drive it fairly sedately and you would never guess what the car is capable of (and get slightly better mpg), but it is more fun not to and to "test" the cars capabilities wherever possible, which usually results in having to "test" the breaks a fair amount, (especially in London).

Depending on who you buy the car from, as vasilis says , it may need a bit of engine TLC (i.e money spending on it) to get it running as well as it can. Do a bit of research on this forum (and others like www.s2forum.com) just so you know what you are getting yourself into, but if you do get one you won't regret it!

Thanks for the replies guys......

I'm probably going to test drive it this week..... I know this is a ridiculous question but is there any faults I should really be looking out for?

The car has had 2 owners from new and as far as documents go it has every reciept and service stamp since it left Stuttgart! The cambelt, water pump and new discs and pads all around have just been done, the Clutch was done at 100,000kms.

The exterior is spotless! It has the audi/porsche RS2 stickers on the side doors stating limited edition anyone seen that before?

Just one thing strikes me as odd....

Now I've had quite a few performance 4 wheeldrive cars and on all of them the tyre wear was almost similar front and back meaning 4 new tyres every time.... Now when I was inspecting this RS it had Toyo's on the back and Bridgestones on the front. possibly indicating that they were changed at different times? Is that normal is tyre wear somehow different between front and back?

Cheers,

 no...

I used to have Dunlop in front and Yokoama in rear...
That's because I bought 4 Yokoama (in the regular size), but the I realized they din't fit in the front, but they were perfect in rear.
So I didn'0t want to waste them end I used that system.

Yes, I did understand...
With the same dimension, thay can fit or they cannot fit, for their shape...
It dipends on the side's design...
So, for example, DUNLOP SP SPORT fit, YOKOAMA don't fit, on the same dimension...

Hello,
it seems in really good condition.Post some pictures of the interior.
It only seems too early to have a clutch change at 100.000....Either it was rigously used,or it was damaged somehow.Find out if you can if it has the CGR or CRB gearbox. The second was used from mid 1995 RS2 models and has been strengthened rather than the CGR.Mine has the same Kms,and it works great.Im considering of changing it around 180-200.000kms...

Also if it carries a boost gauge, make sure it reaches values of up to -1bar of vaccum when moving without pressing the accelerator pedal, and 1.4bar of boost in the last 3 gears.
While driving, make sure you listen to any tappeting sounds, etc(you already know this stuff i guess),power steering feel.

Also i noticed that this car doesnt carry the standard discs, maybe a pic of those would be nice!Does it have the 322x32 or the standard 304 discs?

cheers

It does have the 322x32 discs it was upgraded....

For the gearbox model where would I look?

No boost gauge unfortunately

The engine is wonderfully smooth and no disturbing noises.

The car drives fantastic not much go at low revs....
But once you go past 3k it's sweet progressive acceleration...
Handling was tight with no rattles or bangs...
Full leather interior heated seats in great shape passangers seat looks like it's never been sat in! Climate control and all the usual standard toys.

Just one thing bugged me on the test drive... and it wasn't oddly enough the garage owner screaming....

it was the brakes great as they were, I was very shocked on the pedal travel... at least half way! Is that normal?

Temperature didn't go above 80-90 degrees either.

Oil pressure was just under 5 bars on idle when cold and around 2 when warm.

Cheers,

Plums.

ok please send a pic of the interior!!!
now for the info you say:
Gearbox, you have to have the car lifted up,it is written wright under it!

The brakes moving so far in may what is called 'bomb' accumulator which may have started going bad.Change of this is around 300eyro new from audi.It is a must as it reggulates the pressing pedal and the sudden braking of the car.Other than that it may need some bleeding of the brake system.(if all fluids are ok that is...)

Oil pressure sounds ok.It should reach 5bar when cold and around 2 when warm.Checking the oil level and type may vary.

Engine temperature also is ok,depending on thermostat.Oil temperature is around the 2nd line, when driven nicely.

Also what was the feel of the clutch? Was it soft as any other car you have driven,or harder? Was it noticably harder?

cheers
Vasilis
