BIG RED brakes+parts...

Post by VaudiGR » Tue Oct 18, 2005 10:21 pm

hello everyone,
i have a problem. After cleaning my brake calipers and discs,i still have a squeeking sound from my front brake pads touching the disks.I have the big reds(993/GT2)brakes.I need to know where i can buy the springs that push the pads against the discs, and any other material causing this squeek. My discs and pads are fairly new,so maybe the lack of distance is elevating the problem...
help please!!!!

This problem may also be due to caliper plate lift; which happens when the stainless steel brake pad guide reacts with the alluminium alloy of the caliper and corrosion sets in. The corrosoin displaces the stainless steel guides, forcing the pads against the disk causing brake squeal. It also makes pads difficult to remove and often when fitting new pads the edges have to be ground down.

This is a common problem with RS2 porsche calipers, both standard and big reds. Newer porsche monoblocs such as the 996tt and GT3 calipers do not have this problem as they do not have the stainless steel brake pad guides. Often the squeal happens as when you are not using the brakes, when you apply the brakes the squeal goes away

The stainless steel guides can be removed (not always easilly) and the corrosion can be filled back as per this link:
http://www.arthurlea.com/Porsche/Brakes/brakes.htm

Or if the corrosion gets too bad you can get new calipers and if you don't want it to happen again get monoblocs.

other reasons for squeal could be build ups of brake dust, dirt and/or old grease or copper slip, pushing the pads against the disk. You could try giving the calipers a good clean, renewing the shims, springs etc and refitting them dry, as in without any grease (as I think recommended by porsche).

thanks guys.i will try and find parts from the links.
Angus,i will try to avoid the new caliper option,as they are costly.I think that a good service on the brakes will make them as new. However,my mechanic told me that he stripped clean of any corrosion of the springs that work the pads.
The squeeking sound i get from the brakes are excactly as you describe. As soon as i push the brake it stops.NOw after the first cleaning my mechanic did,it only sounds if i have pushed the brakes slowly to a stop, and then they squeek when i start moving again, and after a certain velocity, they stop(they use to squeek all the way)..

no.the pads seem secure and locked in.I dont think there is any pad movement while braking or with the car standing in the garage.
So what i need to buy are 8 damping shim pads(4 for front and 4 for rear),and then 4 stainless steel brake pad guides the ones called 'caliper repair kits'??

why is vag parts so expensive in regard to the porsche online shop?
I mean the same damping pads are 4.50euro in porsche and 8quid in vagparts!!!

Damping pads from porsche are difrent to audi/ vagparts.
Porsche pads are singles so you will need 4 per caliper and from audi/vag you will need two per caliper cos they are double.

Today my new big reds calipers, new standard rears calipers, new disks, goodrich hoses, new hard lines, and new brake bomb were all fitted, along with a thorough flush with ATE Super Blue brake fluid . No more squelling, no more flashing exclaimation mark (!). Pads and disks are still bedding in so no real comments on performance, although after an hour on the motorway driving home with some heavy braking things where starting to feel good.

My old calipers front and rear were in poor shape with the area behind the anti rattle plates suffering from serious corrosion, resulting in up to 5mm of lift in places; no wonder they squealed so badly and the pads wouldn't fit in without be ground down. At some point I will take one of the rear calipers to a porsche dealer and try and find out what it originally came from and if it has a porsche part number.

Incidently the adhesive backed brake pad shims for the 993tt big red front calipers came as per robo's picture above; a large rectangular shim to cover two pots - i.e. 2 per caliper. The standard RS2 rear caliper adhesive backed brake pad shims came as single circular shims, 1 for each pot, 2 large and 2 small) i.e 4 per caliper.

If you are planning to change your six brake hoses to goodrich (very nicely made) or renew with OEM, be prepared to replace or make good all the hard lines that the hoses attach to (six), in addition to the front caliper hard lines. We could not remove any of the connectors on the hard lines without rounding them off or destroying them and ended having to cut them off. In the end we found it easier to make up new rear hard lines with new connectors between the calipers and T-pieace. On the front we had to cut the old connectors from the hard lines and fit new connectors and splay (?) the old pipes whilst on the car. Very boring job.

Lastly if you are thinking of ordering ferodo DS2500's for the rear calipers, the Ferodo part number FCP541H in their catalouge is wrong. Although listed as correct for RS2 rear pads, they are not, they are too small and don't fit. Both Demon Tweaks and Motorsport World, use Ferodo's info and as a result i got the wrong pads. Very annoying. Ended up having to use Textars, as they where the only ones available local to where the work was being done.
