Buying an RS2

I have been in a few rs2's and know they are awesome cars and are a cut of sort, and went in another one recently which helped me make the decison that I want to buy one.

I currently drive a golf vr6 and was looking at getting an s3 next, but would much prefer an rs2. I have around 12-13k to spend and was wondering if I could pick up a decent RHD version for this money?

I was also wondering as to any pointers you guys could give me on buying one and any common problems to look out for. Another thing I am considering is insurance.... as I am only 20, but can go under my dads insurance as a named driver which will hopefully cut the cost down!

Any advice will most appreciated.
Regards
Matt

Hi Matt,

My previous car was a VR6 as well! Being an RS2 owner for a month now, my best piece of advice is take your time and drive a few. I bought mine privately a bit over the figure you are quoting, its got 70k on it and is the best example I could find. It took about a year of looking, I was going to buy an S4 Avant but fell upon the RS2 from a freead on here!

Its not been without its teething problems though! After having some work done at a main dealer I discovered my hall sender was playing up, which basically means the car wouldn't start when hot. There was hardly any boost as well. This was fixed when I went to an Independent who advised I change the cambelt as well even though it had only been done 10k ago. Interestingly the cambelt was one tooth out, I also changed the waterpump as well whilst the sender was being changed. Now its sorted its a great understated car....I still love the look when people can't work out why your old family estate has got big porsche calipers on it!

So to summarise then, take your time and drive a few, be prepared to spend money on the maintenance (I budget a £1000 a year, over that in month one!), keep a look out on here and S2forum as these cars are usually a better proposition than some stealer.

Search this and S2forum and you'll find alot of valuable buying information!

Hope this helps and good luck!

Simon

Thanks very much mate. The s2 forum was also really helpful. I am really wanting an RS2 and have kinda set my heart on one, the only thing which might knock me is insurance :(

I am in no rush and will take my time and keep some money in reserve!
