Cause of "Rumbling" Noise identified

I've been pestered recently with an unusual rumbling noise which I thought was brake/suspension/bearing related.
The cause was tyre related which was discovered when I changed all four Bridgestone RE050 tyres for new Pirelli Neros. Even though the Bridgestone tyres had only done 7k miles and were less than 1/2 worn - each tyre seemed to have high spots where tyre tread blocks on the same tyre circumferential band had worn more than others. It's almost as if some tread blocks were softer than others. This then led to a rumbling noise that was most noticeable on smooth roads.

I had the same noise - took the car to a Dealer. The noise was from the handbrake unit - the plate had come adrift. Now on long back order.

What part of the handbrake was broken - was it these bits ? They rusted on mine & came adrift from the backing plate. My mechanic spoke to Kim Collins @ QST & he said this is common and he sometimes just leaves them off rather than replace new backing plates @ £90 each. So that's what I did. I'm not sure what purpose they have anyway.

I don't know - have forwarded this mail to my Audi Dealership - HR Owen at Whetstone and also Scillyisles one on the suspension/brakes mods he has recently carried out. My car has done 70k miles, and feels a bit unstable at times.

Just got my car back - the part number is W8A0 615 412 Carrier &
repair kit W8A0 698 585 - hope that helps
