rs2 driven

So I've tried one, and it was ace!

80,000km, 15,000 euros - not the cheapest in mainland Europe by any means, but not that far off, either.

The car felt really tight, like the mileage was genuine. Strong motor, good brakes, everything seems to work.

In the past I've always bought the first car of any type I've tried - flying in the face of received wisdom. There are some good reasons why I'd be wise to break with my own tradition in this case.

The previous owner of the car is now in prison, apparently. This accounts for the complete and utter lack of service history.
The body has a number of imperfections - scrapes on the wheels, the rear bumper has lost its forward edges where someone has hit the back of the car at what must have been rapid parking speed - normal for a Parisian car, I'm assured - and the rear reflective strip is cracked. One of the front foglights is holed. More seriously, the passenger side wing seems mis-aligned, and the airbag light is lit - signs of a slightly harder impact at the front?

The car is also on 245 tyres, and is devoid of badging - but the chassis number is WAC and thus should be legit. Brakes seem in decent nick and pull the car up well.

Now you tell me to walk away, right? But it felt so nice! I'm rambling, but if I could get them to service it properly, do the wheels...How much would a rear reflective strip go for? Do they go at all these days?
Thanks to anyone with the patience to sift through this overexcited stream of consciousness:)

Check with VAG Parts for the reflector panel. I think they were about £60 last time I checked. You see them on eBay now & again too. Front fog's are about the same price.

The airbag light could simply be just a stored ECU fault code which when cleared will clear the warning light. Wheels can be refurbished cheaply enough. The bumper & wing will be more expensive though. What colour is it ? Pearlescant paint can be very difficult to blend if it needed any paintwork.

If you're in any doubt though walk away. There are plenty of others out there especially LHD. I looked at 3 others before I bought mine. I personally wouldn't buy one without any history either.

Thanks for the pointers, Pete. The car is Polar Silver, which looks much better - more distinctive - than I'd imagined.
VAG parts look like they might be more than useful.
One other thing, you know the button marked 'Diff' in the centre console? What does it do? Is it to lock the diff for snow or something? Why should that help?
Anyway, you're quite right. I'll check out a couple of other cars around Paris before I do anything too rash.
Cheers!

I think Polar Silver is my favourite RS colour. The rear diff lock is indeed intended as an aid when starting off in very difficult road conditions. It disengages automatically above 25 km/h. Happy hunting!

Really do look around esp as you will have more examples to consider than we have (assuming RHD)
Good luck

Rear panel was £56.32+vat when I last asked - I too had my eye on a Polar Silver RS2 with cracked rear panel :D Probably a scrape from a former ram-raid I have been reliably told. Look for scratches on the roof and rear 1/4 etc to see if there are any scars also, as it may have been through a shop window or shutter!

To be honest, the car you mention sounds like a dog. Surely 15k will get you something straight?

Cheers

It's nice, but it's got wood - fussy, aren't I?!
There's a lovely-looking black one on the same site for a few dollars more (sorry, don't know why this url's so long):

Then there's this one in Paris:

He's blacked-out the Audi rings! Must be a Max Power merchant...
I think a road trip's in order.
Thanks again everyone :nodder:

You can change the wood to carbon. From ebay you'll get the carbon lists for about 300e? The work is about one day if you are handy.

The big items to concentrate on are brakes, suspension (bushes, shocks), wheels, turbo, exhaust manifold and engine in general. Also look at door lists that corrode and cost a lot to replace. Don't be fussy with minor details you can put right -or live with.

You will enjoy RS2, btdt, :) but it is 10+ years old and very rare. The good examples are worth the extra, but even then you'll need to maintain them actively.

Looking through the pictures in the ad, why is the rev counter showing nearly 2k RPM? Surely it doesn't idle that high unless it doesn't idle at all and he is holding it on the revs?

Good luck anyway with the trip :D

Excellent detective work, Mr Jacks:) He's probably just toeing the throttle in excitement as he takes the pic, but I'll look out for that one.
Jani, I take your point but can't really see myself poking at the interior of my new car with a screwdriver! Regardless, realistically speaking I'm not discounting anything within 'reasonable' range for the moment.
Except for one with those nasty headlight eyebrows, obviously.

You can take the nasty eyebrows off, and sell them to the highest (german) bidder in ebay :)
