Hi Guys, been a member a while but this is my first post.

A motor trader friend of mine has just aquired an RS2, a car I've fancied for years.

It's a '95 M done 70,300 miles with full service history and all old MOTs.

The car is in absolutely mint condition both inside and out.

He's given me first refusal on it, the only problem is that I'd have to sell my 968 Club Sport to be able to justify it.

I use the Porsche mainly for track days, obviously the RS2 is a heavier car but would it be suitable for this type of thing?

Also what do you think a fair price would be for this? I know what he paid but I don't want to insult him by offering way below what he could get for it elsewhere.

Hi,

no idea on price but comparing an RS2 to a 968 for tracking is like chalk & cheese.
For a start, I assume you've got your 968 reasonably well sorted already, right ?

The first thing you'll need to sort on the RS2 will be the brakes. They will fade to nothing in no time.
Then a short shifter, and maybe suspension after that.

A friend of mine has a china blue 968cs with big reds, rosejointed suspension, etc.
I have a 993 C2.
We did a driver training day along with a guy with an RS2. Within 5 laps of the short test
track we were driving the RS2 had lost pretty much all brakes. Both my C2 and the 968
were able to keep going for the duration no problem ;)

The big difference with the RS2 though was its ability to hold a corner when compared
to the C2 and the CS. We were purposely trying to find the limits of the car, and as
expected the C2 would break away when I got close to the limit.
The 968 would too if the power was lifted, or just go wide if held on.
The RS2 would just drift wide but in a controllable manner.
The instructor even had a go and had to be pretty brutal to get it out of shape if I recall correctly.

I should add all this was done on road tyres.

Bottom line, you'll have fun with the RS2 but I would not expect it to be a better track car than the 968cs, which is recognised as being one of the best balanced and forgiving track cars for the money.

I'll stick my flame suit on now as no doubt the RS owners won't agree with me.

Upgrade brakes, aka big reds, don't really fade at all. It is quite a common option / retrofit in RS2's. I don't think it needs a short shifter either, RS4 definately does, but RS2 not. But otherwise I'd agree with JohnW. Although RS2 is more challenging on limit than RS4, it is nowhere near as hard to drive on the edge as Porkers.

But RS2, or RS4 or RS6 for that matter, don't really make a good basis for a track car. If you want a very fast and sensible road car that can handle the odd track day, then they are perfect. For pure track action too heavy, too front biased, not enough cooling, compromises in basic layout...what makes them so good every day, makes them bad as track weapons.

What do you drive daily then -that's what you should replace with the RS2.

Good advice from the others. The RS2 is a fantastic car to own and drive but if it's a track day specialist you're after, then your 968 seems the better bet. Haven't tracked my RS2 but others have and have enjoyed the experience.

As to price, ask what your dealer friend wants for it - and then negotiate :lol:

Given the mileage, service history + MOTs, condition, then on the open market I would think a similar car would be likely to be advertised for between £15,000 and £20,000. Just check what work has been done to date and whether belts have been done recently.

Colour will have an impact on the price - with RS Blue and Silver tending to be more desirable.

I take on board that it's probably not as suited to the track as the 968 but it is a car I've always liked and I don't think I'll ever have the chance to buy one as nice as this at what will probably be quite reasonable money.

I drive an X5 as an everyday car and rack up quite a lot of mileage so it's not really an option as an everyday car.

It's the sort of car that a specialist garage will probably get £20k for but I can probably buy it for quite a bit less.

Do you think that the values of RS2s have dropped as far as they'll go?

Just out of curiosity who is retailing the car ? I bought my car from an independent dealer in Harrogate Marcus Fothergill (which is my home town) after he beat Fontain to the car traded at the Leeds main audi dealer(name escapes me). PM me if you prefer.
Mine cost £ 16 995 @ 76K FSH 4 owners mint in/out which I felt was fair.
Values will always fall but I think that will tend to be slow for well cared for cars. Mine has 82k and would probably retail for the same price with a specialist.
I would say that these cars are best if driven on a regular basis.
Finally I would check the board for infomation about what to check for and budget for things like DVs/shocks/bushes even with FSH unless you can see they have been done.

Oh and you will enjoy it !!

Final point @ 70k it will not have had the belts done (80k in service schedule). I would recommend you do this ASAP given age and get the waterpump done at the same time.

They're definitely better if driven on a regular basis. If it is garaged most of the time I'm sure it will lead to problems. I bought mine a couple of months ago after it had been standing around for a while. It had only done about 100 miles in the last 8 months and the front & rear brake pads were binding and part of the handbrake mechanism had seized.

Funnily enough the guy I bought it from had replaced it with an X5 for his everyday use. This was purely because he needed more space. Of course he much preferred driving the RS2 everyday and really regretted selling it.

I don't think RHD prices have dropped much atall in the last couple of years. They still seem to be going for around £15-20k. Maybe they have bottomed-out ?

BTW it's also worth changing the crank pulley when doing the cambelt as there is a history of them breaking - see S2Forum.

I PM'd you about your car when you bought it, don't know if you remember but I was supposed to have first refusal on it when it was part exchanged at Franklin Audi in Leeds but it disappeared before i could get there!
