What is this vent for?

In the hatch where the rear window water bottle is, there is a vented cover just behind the wheel hub. What is it for? Under the car at the same place there is a container, like a small petrol tank, what is that for? I am wanting to fit an Audi OEM cd shuttle in there, but will need to restrict that vent a bit. I thought the vent has somethinh to do with the cars ventilation system.
I am also installing an amplifier in the car. That is going in the spare wheel well where the original shuttle went. Ther is just no space in this car to hide an amp and shuttle. I have an Audi Concert head unit in. Where was the cars amplifier originally fitted? Did it have one?
Any replies will be great.

I've installed Alpine Sat Nav, TV, TMC, 6 DVD/CD changer plus phone system in mine so I'm quite familiar with all the spaces you can install kit in the RS2.
The original stereo did not have an amp (at least not for UK cars) it was a Sony headunit with inbuilt amplification.
In my upgraded system I've installed the amp underneath the rear cover that goes ontop of the spare wheel housing and then put the DVD/CD changer underneath the amp - so in essence I've used the standard position where the CD changer in UK cars was mounted and just used the extra depth to fit the amp above the CD changer.
The other place where there is space is in the left hand side just on top of the rear wheel i.e. in front of the access panel to the battery and toolkit. It was in here that I mounted a TV Tuner (a small amp might fit in here)
My phone holder is actually mounted on top of the black plastic vent to which you are referrring and the GSM booster box is underneath the vent. The other place you can put things is on the parcel shelf underneath the steering wheel - that's where I had to put the Sat Nav DVD drive as there was no more space in the boot.
Hope this helps.

I am going to open up cover next to rear wheels and see. Maybe thats where I can put my amp. I was a bit worried about the heat generated if I put CD changer + Amp in spare wheel housing. I noticed a lot of space under that vent cover. Would still like to know what it is for.

I've had no problems with heat generated by the CD and amp/tuner being in the spare wheel well. Don't forget a CD changer generates negligible heat. The amp I'm using is the hideway box which contains a 4 x45W amp plus the radio tuner for the Alpine headunit.
Unless your amp is compact, I don't think it would easily fit in the space above the left rear wheel and ventilation there would be a problem too.

the vents there are just to help the air flow thru the car. standard sort of vent on most cars.

I have my cd changer in the drivers side glovebox. It is only a small 6 disc unit and fits perfect. The head unit is a standard din size and already has Sat Nav built in so no problems there.
I have put my amp on the boot floor, and i made a subwoofer enclosure myself, it's circular so it fits inside the the spare wheel rim. I made up a little framework that sits on the boot floor, and covered a piece of MDF in black fabric so effectively it has a false floor. No worries about anyone putting the window through unless they are reading this
