Newbie - looking for advice
Sorry guys, I'm sure this post comes up time and again, but I'm thinking of an RS2 as my next car. I have always fancied one and they seem to make as much sense 10 years on as they did when they were launched, so maybe now is the time.
My shortlist is rapidly diminishing to VX220 Turbo and RS2 - the RS2 being the sensible choice in terms of cost and practicality, if not running expenses and age.
Ideally I'd like to stick with an open car but nothing bar the VX seems interesting in my budget and I'd far sooner spend around £12k rather than £20k if I can get away with it. If I have to have a roof then i may as well have a big boot as well!
So, is around £12k enough to get a decent RHD car? It'll be used every day, 500 miles a week, and the car park at work needs a pass to open the barrier which would be a pain with LHD. More seriously I have had 3 LHD cars in the past and I'd sooner not go there again.
Specifically does anyone have any comments on this one? http://www.eporsch.co.uk/0101for_sale.htm
Cheers!

£12k is probably towards the low end of the price range for a good RHD RS2.
Re the ePorsch one - it's relatively high mileage and red isn't one of the most popular colours. Some colours like RS Blue seem to attract a premium.
An August 1994 M reg RHD car will have been one of the first to come into the UK and is likely to have the the CGR gearbox from the S2 - ie without the strengthened first gear. Later RS2s have the CRB box which has a stronger first gear. CGR gearboxes may have a fault and make a lot of noise in first gear - but QST said they hadn't known any to fail.
Goes without saying that with a high mileage car you need to check what work has been done and what is likely to need doing in the future. Worth paying QST or another RS2 specialist to check over a prospective purchase.
If you do a search on this forum there's quite a lot of info re buying. EVO did a buyers guide a while back.

Thanks - the gearbox bit is something I wouldn't have picked up on. Red would be my least preferred colour TBH, but I've pretty much decided I could live with any of the colours they came to the UK in.
I'm not overly worried about miles - I've mostly bought high-milage cars and it has done nothing but save me money, whereas the times I have bought low-milage I have lost a packet come resale because I do quite a high annual milage in them.
From what I have read so far the RS2 is like all the pure Porsches I have had in that it takes huge milages in its stride if it's serviced properly - is that true?
There's no rush anyway I guess as it's just coming into the wrong time to sell a cab, so I might well just keep my eyes open until spring since I'm guessing 4wd performance estate prices are less seasonal than cabriolet ones.

I have to agree that you will struggle to get a RHD @ 12k But you never know. AMD are replacing the engine in an otherwise good UK car and were talking a similar figure. It may be worth talking to them.
I have had my RS2 for a few months following an S2 I had for 7 years so I had some idea what to look for pre and post purchase. Check my posts for some info that may be useful
Given my experience I would advise the following
1 Do not rush. Take your time and test drive a few
2 Get a RS2 specialist to look over the car AMD, QST come to mind or ask a forum member to look at the car with you/for you
3 Check the service history pre purchase if you can ie ring some of the previous service agents and find out what has been done.
4 Put a wanted ad on this forum and S2 forum. If you can get an enthusiast owed car I think you could be on to a winner
5 Dont dismiss modified cars but check who did what ie AMD QST
6 Fountain indep audi dealer have seen most UK cars but I must admit have not had any recently
Good hunting

Taking your advice on prices on board I went to see this one today:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail ... 6794&s=278
I didn't drive the car - understandably perhaps, the vendor wanted me to be 'serious' about it before I took it out and short of lying to him I couldn't do that because I've never even been in one before - but we did go out in in.
The seats are great and the ride is exactly as I like it. From the passenger seat it didn't feel any quicker than my (944) S2 but I don't think the pedal was "on the Wilton" exactly. It did seem very, very keen to understeer on a roundabout taken briskly rather than outright quickly which was far from impressive. The alignment is yet to be checked with electronic equipment although it has been done by mechanical means.
A few questions popped up in my head that maybe you guys can help with:
The tyres have just been replaced with brand new Dunlop 9000 in 245 width. That's the wrong size, right?
The rear badge is on the wrong side - on discussing this it transpired that the tailgate has been painted because of corrosion around the screen. The screen was removed to repair it, but is that common?
There are at least two "scabs" on the paint. The suggestion is that this is a reaction between the paint and the panel (admitting a repair must have caused it) rather than corrosion. One area is just above the rear bumper on the drivers side panel and the other is right on the curve at the top of the driver's side front wing, about 3 inches in front of the A-pillar. What do you think about that both in terms of a reason for the blemishes and also that it has been so extensively painted? There was no indication of panel replacement that I could see.
While I was looking at the car I was quite into it, but since leaving and driving home I'm strangely ambivalent. Maybe that's because I didn't drive it myself, but normally I get quite excited when I've just been to see my 'next car'.

Re tyres - the RS2 was originally fitted with Dunlop SP Sport 8000 in 245/40ZR17. These tyres are no longer made and as I understand it there are no other 245/40ZR17 tyres that will fit 7 inch rims of the RS2.
The recommended option is to 225/45ZR17 but check with the tyre manufacturer that the tyre is ok for fitment on a 7 inch rim.
I've got Michelin Pilot Sport 2s on mine currently - had problems with the non-recommended size it came with.
Not sure that the new Dunlop's are designed for a 7" rim - may be worth checking with Dunlop. And there are reports on here of potentially catastrophic problems with the wrong size tyres.
Don't think any of those sites you mention are common ones for corrosion.
I'd read up about the RS2 and was already smitten with the beast. Went to look at one locally - just because it was local initially as I didn't think i wanted one in RS Blue. I was totally sold on the RS2 the first time the salesman put his foot down and the turbo kicked in, and the car took off.

It is corrosion due to the previous damage to galvanised body. You would need to re paint and eventually it will reappear as you cannot 'repair' galvanisation. It suggests to me previous accident damage. You need to dig deeper into this cars history. Personally I would walk away as there are always others.
Tyres wrong as Cobstar states. Exactly same as mine on purchase. Much improved handling with 'downsize' altough 225/45 slightly wider than OEM Dunlop 8000 !!
Understeer, very little if you commit a sorted car, in fact if anything you can induce power oversteer if you push it with 225s/OEM 8000s ( the way porsche set them up). Suggests tired dampers/bushes/wrong tyre size/bushes/alignment.
If all this is sorted the paint issue would make me wary. Your feeling after you got home is the one to listen to me thinks

Tyres are wrong size and very dangerous - my Audi dealer put 5 Dunlop SP9000 on as replacements in the 245 size - when I spoke to Dunlop technical support about it - they were horrified and said no way should that tyre be fitted on a 7 inch rim. Outcome was Audi dealer replaced all 5 tyres foc for Bridgestone Potenza RE040 in 225/45ZR17.
Audi's and the RS2 in particular as very rust resistant - only weak ppoint in the RS2 is a small section underneath the rear of the car. There's no way the rear hatch would normally show those symptoms unless accident damage - car has probably been rear ended and then repaired.
Handling wise, a car in good condition should handle relatively neutral and the car can be put into a 4 wheel power drift. However when the suspension is in need of work, the car will crash over bumps, understeer badly and feel rather floatly in high speed corners etc. Quite a few people on here have replaced the standard shocks with Konis etc - I'll be doing the same shortly on mine as the original shocks are tired.

Anyone got any idea of the relative numbers of each colour? They all seem to be black or silver but I thought blue would be the most popular.
I also know (via the Net) someone who knows someone who may want to take my cab in p/x against a Ragussa one that I am still waiting to hear from. It's done 122k and apparently running 420bhp with Carillo rods and steel head gasket, hybrid Porsche 930 turbo etc. - it that likely to be bad news?

Blue, Silver, Black, Ragussa(dark green) seem to be the most popular RHD colours. I dont have numbers but someone will scillyisles ?? The first two were unique to the car Rs blue I think the most popular, with polar silver a porsche colour. The first performance car review with john barker featured a polar car and I longed for one for years.Anyone got any idea of the relative numbers of each colour? I would only consider the tuned car if you know who did the work and after a full check from AMD or QST.

Go and look at that car before I'm tempted to try and argue that a slightly lower mileage one would be a perfect complement to our current "stable". I'm sure if you get a ride/drive in an RS2 that's going well, you'll be an instant convert.
We were debating at home a few weeks ago as to whether we'd buy a mint or near mint RS2 if it came on the market and decided the answer was probably yes - funds allowing!

Unfortunately, I don't know the numbers produced in each colour - the Audi dealer I bought mine from sold eight with Polar Silver the most popular at this dealer. I'd guess that overall Polar Silver (Porsche paint code not Audi Polar Silver) is the most popular colour with Black and Ragussa Green next followed by RS Blue. Lazer Red as someone commented is relatively rare. On the continent they were available in other metallics.alastairg wrote:Blue, Silver, Black, Ragussa(dark green) seem to be the most popular RHD colours. I've got probably every magazine/newspaper article written about the RS2 in a big folder including the Performance Car review written by John Barker and the magazine article which shows an RS Blue one taking off over a hump back bridge.
