A whining noise is probably either the pump giving up or a clogged filter causing it to work harder. I am surprised that yours is making a noise at only 76k. Mine gives an occasional whine now and again but its done 145k+ and I recently replaced my filter which cured some dangerous lean running too. If you are going for bigger power you can replace the sock pump with a Bosch Motorsport item which is good for well over 500horses on the I5. Since the motorsport pump is larger than the existing in-tank unit, you need a few additional parts in order to fit it. Total cost for the Bosch pump and associated bits is around 200quid.

"Rattle" on start-up?

Is the noise a bit of a sort of "rattle"-like noise? Mine's been doing that for 2 years now and occasionally whines a bit, too. Changed filter to no avail. Am told it's slowly on the way out, at 115k miles, but then it's been doing it for 2 years now and still goes just fine....

I had the same problem, after new pump the noise is still there, so must be the fuel filter, try to change that what a f*** bastard, would not come out.

You need to drop the tank to change the filter on the 80Avant Quattro chasis. It's a PITA. I cut the plastic bracket (which is welded to the plastic tank) and fitted a larger S2 ABY Coupe filter to mine. Apart from some petrol in my eye, I did the job in about 30minutes.

i have the same noise, i think !
turn the key, after start up the car idles, then i begin to hear what i think is the pump going flat out, then the noise disapears
seems like its getting up to pressure then levelling out
mine has been like this for years ! never caused a prob

Thanks to all
Had similar problem with S2 resolved by replacement. HOWEVER since post all has gone quiet!!
It may be the increased noise courtesy of the exhaust c/w S2 that fooled me.

its def worth doing, a few of the owners did it and it solved a few running problems. obviously previous owners had the same thoughts as you when it came to be serviced. lol
