Pondering a move from the S3 to RS2 territory and was wondering when you need to change the belts and/or do any major (or recommended) servicing work. Seeing as most of the examples around have 80-100K+ under their belts, I take it that they should have had money spent by now.

Have to agree with David, Audi reckoned my RS4 was OK for 80k miles, but every car I had previous was around 35k to 45k mark. If you're looking at a high miler, especially on high power lower displacement engines, then at 90k miles I would expect it to have been changed twice [img]images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img]

Just out of interest David, what's the cost on an RS2 cambelt change?

I had my cambelt changed at 27k in 2001 when the car was just over 6 years old as age is a factor for low mileage cars.
The labour cost (at Audi dealer) was £217 exc VAT.
The cambelt itself cost £49 exc VAT

The RS2 is very sensitive to plugs - I had my first set changed at 18K in 1999 and another set fitted at 28k in 2002. Each set costs £72.50 exc VAT

it was around 200 quid plus vat, i will get the history out and have a look, [img]images/graemlins/thumbs.gif[/img] i remember i was advised that it was a good idea to change one of the pulley's at the same time [img]images/graemlins/nodder.gif[/img]

The RS2 runs long life platinium tipped spark plugs that cost a lot and are supposed to last much longer than normal plugs. My experience is that they don't last as long as Audi indicate. There was a very noticeable difference when I changed my spark plugs - engine ran much smoother and was noticeable more urgent in pickup etc. This has happened both times I've changed my spark plugs. My car is a low mileage car (only 35K since new in 1995) so in eight years of ownership I'm on my third change of spark plugs - I guess you need to take age of spark plugs into consideration and change them every three years if you don't reach the mileage limit.

Thanks guys, for around £250 for a cambelt change you may aswell have one done to be on the safe side.
I too have heard about the plug issue, requiring frequent changes, but my advise was to get the less expensive items as they don't tend to last too long anyway.
Any more helpful advise on maintenance/servicing and pricing would be much appreciated [img]images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

I'm assuming the spark plugs in the RS2 are the same as in the S2? 101 000 016 AA - Bosch F5DPOR.

If you are paying £75, you are paying too much - the genuine Bosch parts can be had for £8 each from German and Swedish(I think it was there). Even some Audi parts deptartment charge <£10 each.

Remember not to over torque them - 30Nm

And only use genuine ones - the cheaper ones will give you other running problems. I have no experience of any better/more expensive spark plugs.

Just had a 10,000 mile service on mine and the plugs fitted were the same as Dougal has quoted for the S2. I was charged £47.20 + VAT for the 5 plugs.

Well I bought an RS2 with a fair few miles on the clock earlier this year and she's still going strong. I've somehow managed to put a further 8,500 miles on the clock - with some help from him indoors. Something to do with the "silly grin" factor from driving such a fantastic car.

Some of the parts are expensive for the RS2 - and not always in stock for immediate despatch. The Audi supplied front brake pads are very expensive if the car has the standard discs - but if you read throught the posts I think Mike S has given the part number for Porsche pads which should be cheaper.

Turbos generally are reckoned to last about 75-80,000 miles but mine is still going strong - she say's desperately touching wood! So you might want to factor in setting aside some money for a replacement on a higher mileage car.

It would be interesting to know how many RS2s have had their turbos replaced through necessity rather than a desire to upgrade/modify. Indeed, it would be interesting to know what the highest known mileage is on an RS2.

EVO did a good buyer's guide to the RS2 which gave costs for some key parts. I can get you a photocopy but hopefully someone on hear will have an electronic copy (Jeremy?)

And of course with an 8 or 9 year old car with average or above average mileage you're going to need general wear and tear repairs.

If you're genuinely interested in running an RS2 it's worth having a chat with someone like Kim Collins at QST who knows his way round the car to find out all the pros and cons.

You are lucky, I've put 15k miles on mine in 6 months [img]images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img] and I only drive 6 miles to work each day [img]images/graemlins/crazy.gif[/img]
Grin factor still very active [img]images/graemlins/biggrin3.gif[/img]

£10 a plug is better than £15 [img]images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

Yes these are the plugs and yes they are much cheaper at German and Swedish - currently they are £6.25 plus VAT
