My spare key doesn't do what it's supposed to. It will open the door and start the engine - but accompanied by a persistent buzzing noise. Even managed to drive away and then found that things like the indicators didn't work so returned home for the main key!

I assume I'll need to go to an Audi dealer to get this sorted out. I've rung two local to me and been given different estimates - one said 1/2 an hours labour to recode. Oh and the switchboard put me through to parts who said it was a service issue! The other said they'd need to check what the problem was first so would need it for a morning, so difficult to estimate cost - but £25 for key and £50/60 labour to 'fit'. Thought they might be able to cut key on premises but it would be a couple of days to get one in.

Hmm, makes mental note to check spare key works next time she buys a car!

Did the car drive fine once you picked up the main set of keys ?

assuming the spare key is already cut they only need to recode the car to accept it, so need the key and car for half an hour as the first place said.

The other garage are just playing extra safe by the sounds of it, incase they can't get it to recode correctly.

If I recall corectly this buzzing means it is Identified as a valid key but has not been set to say what the users preferences are (like only unlocking drivers door etc)

It's just the same for Audi, VW, Porsche etc.

I'd suggest ringing a couple more main dealers and see what they say.

Yes, I'm pleased to say the car drove perfectly once I went back to the main key.

Audi main dealers obviously aren't used to dealing with older cars as I had to disabuse the second garage of the notion that it had remote central locking. But at least that means it will be cheaper to get a new key cut if needed.

There is a chip in the key and it sounds like your spare has lost it's programming. Any good auto accessory shop should be able to re-programme your spare by copying your good key. They don't need the car, just both keys and it takes 2 minutes. If however your chip is buggered you will need a new key and the whole deal will cost about 20 quid.
I'm sure main dealers will rip you off [img]images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]
