I know almost zip about the S2 and RS2 so would someone please provide me with a quick summary of them?

5 Cyl 20v 2.2L Turbo

S2 - 230 bhp (220 on earlier models, I think)
RS2 - 315 bhp thanks to Porsche

The same engine was used in the Volvo T5.

Hang on, where is my anorak....few sad points highlighting my need to get out more often:

The S2 ECU can overboost to 380Nm for short periods.
The official Audi 0-62 times for the S2 (230 bhp): Avant=6.1s and Coupe=5.9s. Many magazines tested the RS2 and it was timed at 4.8s to 60 mph! Plus, quicker than a McLaren F1 to 30 mph (traction baby!).

S2 avant has 64 litre tank (Coupe is 70 litres). Tank not big enough though becuase flat out on the Autobahn you have to fill it every 110 to 130 miles. Cost me quite a bit to drive to Munich last year but it was fun!

Engine is not the same as the T5: 2.3 lite versus 2.2 for the S2 and 'just' 225bhp for the Volvo T5. My dad has an 850R (as T5 but 250 bhp stock, around 275 bhp now) with Milltek racing cat stainless downpipe and system and has a very different engine to the S2. Only takes 6000rpm versus S2s 7500rpm redline. They might share the block casting but that is it. Dads car is faster accelerating than mine at the moment (once over 50 mph) and his top speed is nocking on for 160 mph whilst mine will only do 153 mph on GPS with 280 bhp! He wants to upgrade further but can't really go beyond 300 bhp due to weak internals. S2 stock engine starts bending the rods at around 400-450 bhp. If the blocks are the same he is better off grafting in an S2 engine if he wants more power reliably.

S2 engine identical to RS2 engine except: ECU map, inlet manifold, injectors, turbo, exhaust manifold and exhaust camshaft.

Seems strange that there was a 2 door coupe and a 5 door estate, but no 4 door saloon.

I also assume that if the engine was 'only' 2.2 litre, the RS2 must have some turbo lag!

How come the engine was used by Volvo? Did Audi have some relationship with Volvo in the past? Volvo is owned by Ford isn't it?

The RS2 really comes on stream after 4000 rpm and is then a sky rocket to over 7000 rpm. It is a mental motor considering it was a standard production car.

I don't think the engine was used in a Volvo. The engines certainly look very different. I have maintained and worked on both the 850R and my S2 and the only common component is possibly the block but I can't be sure.

There was a 4-door saloon and they made about 300 cars but all in left hand drive for the US and European markets. There were also a handful of factory RS2 4-door saloons for the German market but don't count on ever seeing one of these on the road anywhere!

Although never available from the factory (right?) a few people have created RS2 Coupes. PhilT's old car which now belongs to Doug_RS2_Coupe was an S2 Coupe which had a load of mods to the added RS2 bits to take power to an even higher level.
