Michelin PS3 - tyre wear

Post by GTRS » Fri Mar 29, 2013 7:59 pm

I fitted some PS3s 7k miles ago - and the rear driver's side is (alarmingly) down to the belts - just noticed, so it's very recent. The other side is also very low tread, though the centre of the tyre is about 2-3 mil. The fronts are over 3mil.
I fitted 225/45 R17 91Y

For previous debate on rating, see http://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... XL#p456869

Someone commented in that thread that they might wear swiftly on the sidewall if I tracked it, but I haven't even come close (other cars for that...), but that is certainly the type of wear. I've never broken traction, nor triggered the ABS; occasional high-speed autobahn motoring (using it as its maker intended; rock solid at 150+). 7k seems like excessive wear.

I may now go for 94Y XL - they seem much more readily-available than a couple of years ago.

Any other new tyres worth trying?

And any views on that tyre wear?

Thanks

G

That is interesting. I have 18inch wheels and thinking of fitting Michelin for the first time. Been using continental so far but want a change.

Judging by your post I will definitely look for the higher load rating

You may recall that I recommended going for the XL rated 94Y version which is what I did. I have only done ~ 1000 miles since that time and naturally have no real tyre wear issues to report. The RS2 runs very well on te PS3.
With regard to your specific problem something is not right as typically the front tyres on an RS2 will take most of the load and therefore will wear first. The rear tyres on the RS2 are there to stop the exhaust dragging on the ground :biggrin3: .
Is your tracking setup correctly?

It was the tracking - way out on the rear; it was obvious when I looked at it with that in mind. Fronts are absolutely fine
