Now what? No power and drinking fuel - intermittently.

The Audi International Day at Castle Combe is not in September as I suggested earlier, it's Saturday 11th October.

Now, you know I'm not a demonstrative chap; after all I drive a black RS2 with no badges. It just looks like a nice old Audi estate with a certain je ne sais quoi about it that goes like stink when required. Well, the S3 diverter valve that MRC fitted is discretion itself and makes no noise at all that I can hear. And while I wasn't in any hurry to go to Messrs Pssssht, Bang and Whistle for a new one, I confess I miss the original one which really did make a very satisfying noise.

What is a chap to do?

:boohoo:

You know, you can drive your favourite roads and compare how quick you're going by the bridge/hoarding/"2 miles to last petrol" sign from a rolling start/standing start/when she's dropped off.

But rarely, in my experience, do you get the opportunity for a nice safe comparison. The other day a bloke in a newish 997 Turbo wanted to race. And by race, I mean he wanted to race anything. The bloke in the rep mobile? Blat! went the Porky. Nope. Rep man didn't want to race. A bloke in a white van? Blat! Nope. A bloke on a Kamakazi 1200? Nope. An old boy on a push bike? Nope. Me? Nope. I was ferrying my son in law's company car. D'oh!

Anyway, he wanted to race, not compare.

Then, this morning, I discovered, once and for all (until the next time something needs tinkering, of course) that my beloved RS2 is running very well indeed. A bloke in a 996 Turbo went sailing by on an otherwise deserted motorway at scary o'clock and, without going mad, we traded places for about six junctions. I honestly believe we were of one mind. We weren't racing, we were comparing. He accelerated hard and I nearly kept up. He eased off, moved over and let me by. I accelerated and we noted how hard he had to work to catch me.*

There was enough time to compare setting off at different speeds in different gears. It was marvellous. And while I admit the letter of the law suffered badly, the spirit of the law was comparatively unscathed.

If he is an enthusiast, he knew what I was driving. If he isn't, he's still puzzled.

* Quite hard, actually. A good day.

Went to see my eldest son in deepest Wales at the weekend and so, unusually, the Countess was aboard the RS2.

She has driven an automatic for years and consequently won't drive the RS2 which she refers to - dismissively, in my view - as a "stick shift". (Daytime television has a lot to answer for.) So with me at the wheel but under her critical eye, the fuel consumption improved from my normal 21 mpg to 25.7 !!

We did over 250 miles and had more than a quarter of a tank of fuel left ! Fantastic. I wasn't hanging about, exactly, it's just that I was driving within her terms of reference rather than mine.

Like I've said before, I honestly believe the RS2 can be all things to all men. You can be racing, shopping, taking trips to the dump, pretending to be in a limousine or winning the performance car fuel economy trials. You name it.
