RS2s in South Africa

Post by urRS2 » Wed Sep 17, 2008 9:08 pm

The figure that gets thrown around here in Johannesburg is around 20 RHD came into SA. Not confirmed. Probably less.

I know of 3 in Cape Town and 4 in Joburg plus there is a NogBlue one for sale (166 000km) ZAR250k.

Not sure where the rest are!?!?

I have a register of all the RS2's that were sold in NZ.
We have had 14 (13 sold new and a brand new one import from the UK) RS2's on NZ, none have been written off.

Here is the info:

x4 Blue (one was exported to OZ brand new)

x4 Sliver (one was exported to the UK in 2006)

x4 Black (one was imported brand new from the UK)

x2 Red (one is Guards Red)

From what I understand NZ got OZ's allocations of RS2's, hence the high numbers of RS2's NZ per head of capita.

NZ Spec RS2's dont have indicators on the front guards and only one RS2 has in NZ has the 4 spoke airbag wheel, all the rest have the 3 spoke airbag wheel.

The DVLA have developed slopey shoulders. They say they can't check the data because they don't have the agent's search criteria. When I told him, the agent replied saying it couldn't be simpler; "There was only one make/model code for Audi RS2 and that returned 149 vehicles."

The only thing the DVLA would confirm is that, as far as they are concerned, their data is sound.

So, there we are, the official figures are 149 RS2s (including 20 imports) currently at large in the UK, none of which are SORN. The members of RS246 believe this to be untrue, at least the SORN part.

Quite where we go from there I don't know.

Hi DickyC, how have you got this information from the DVLA? I'd love to see how many of the RS4 B5's are still on the road from the quoted 400 in the UK figures.

Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Hey Phil,

I struck lucky is the short answer.

The DVLA have farmed out commercial enquiries to agencies whose customers tend to be companies, using general information about vehicles to target particular markets, rather than individuals.

The RS2 form such a small group that one agency - actually the only one to respond - said the data would be £200 but I could have the overall figures for free.

You get at the agencies through Directgov. Look at http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/o ... m#P65_1355
and scroll down to Sale of Anonymised Data for a list of the four agencies. Email all of them and see if you have any luck.

You may feel you need a cover story. My enquiry was couched in the form of, "I'm writing an article," which wasn't entirely true. A while ago I bumped into Paul Chudecki in a pub - no really, I did - and he said he'd like to do an article on the RS2 and this teeny bit of research is my contribution. So don't use the old I'm-writing-an-article gag, it's been used recently!

Paul Chudecki wanted to feature my car :D right up until I told him about the suspension clonking :(

Best of luck,

Dicky

golfboy, I had a word with Glyn and he's fine about you pasting all this good stuff into his RS2 register. I was afraid it would just get lost if it stayed in this quiet backwater. Stick it in behind your entry. Marvellous.

Hi Dicky

I got a response from the guys at polk and the problem with the RS4's is that there are more than one model. He said there are "a little over 3500 RS4's in total" but obviously differentiating the B5's from the B7 Saloon, Avants and Cabrios is not easy. I just sent him one back asking him if he can seach by year of manufacture (MY) between 2000 and 2002 with the odd few being registered in 03 and 04.

Fingers crossed!

My RS2

s4sturge wrote:If the figures are from June, then there was another silver RS2 for sale about that time that was SORN. Based in Bath/Chippenham and kept in storage if I recall. I also saw another SORN car when I looked for mine -(The guy still suggested I took it for a spin! - I walked away!) It is hard to believe all those SORN cars have been resurrected. It has also just occurred to me that the odd cars that get broken privately (blue one recently) are rarely registered as permananently scrapped, just so that the shell can be sold with a V5. That must count for a SORN or two as I doubt they get taxed !?
My RS2 had its V5 'yellow slip' sent off to the dvla to say that it was 'in the motor trade' as the BMW Alpina dealer took it in as part exchange. The last owner was in the forces, and he forgot to give the salesman the V5 for the RS2, so it sat at the Alpina dealers for a few months while the guy was 'in action' until April 2008. The car was not regitered SORN, just 'At Motor Dealer' so this would mess the figures up a bit as the car sat there for a few months!

Hi Dicky - thanks for the reply - I live in Northern Ireland but have attended a few UK events in '08 eg. Goodwood, Chatsworth & I was away in Oct on a tour of the Scottish Highlands with the Quattro Owners Club. I've a friend who lives in Doncaster who has a UR in RS2 spec and I'm over visiting him a few times a year. I have a UR 20v and I wanted to get an RS2 as an addition to my collection. So hopefully next time I'm over I'll catch up with some of the RS2 guys.

Good to see a fellow Ulsterman with an RS2, although I'm now in London.
A lotta people go through life doing things badly. Racing's important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.
