Any ideas?
Any ideas?
In my quest for perfection I've two noises remaining that I'm looking to understand/erradicate. problem is I've only driven one RS2 so don't know if these (or at least the latter) is 'normal'
1) Fast right hand corners, especially if undulating I get a rubbing noise from the front near side corner. Sounds like tyre rubbing body but there appears no evidence of this on inspection. Have just had both front strut top mounts replaced during service (both well worn) which appears to have improved things slightly. Could this be a worn shock absorber? Doesn't appear to be any external indications ie leaks on the shock.
2) Related to a previous thread (the unknown warning light - which has now gone out of it's own accord !!??) I've noticed that when turning and starting off at the same time (eg at a T junction) there appears to be some rumble from the rear wheels. This goes >10mph and at higher speeds the transmission appears v smooth. Had thought this may be a malfunction on the diff lock (remember the warning light) but effect seems to increase (as expected) if diff lock switch turned on. Is this the same on other RS2s? This is my first 4WD so not sure what is 'normal'
As ever your views much appreciated.

Re: Any ideas?
Hi,
it would be helpful to know your tyre/wheel spec. I have the same rubbing sound in fast driving, due to running 235/40-18 tyres, on 8x18 ET52 wheels.
Surprising since stock is 245/40-17 7x17ET52, and should be wider. Apparently OEM Dunlops were quite narrow, so tyre width becomes an issue.
Anyway, right front tyre rubs slightly to r front wheelarch in heavy G-cornering, or more exactly to wheelarches and inner fender liner's connecting screw's base. Not serious, just takes the paint off it, but a nasty sound.

The car has standard wheels running Sp8000 (correct size).

Re: Any ideas?
One thing |I have found, rh turns at low spedd over bumps get knocking, there is a strut of some kind access under wheel arch that needs periodic tightening.
As regards rear diff noise on turning, had similar, cleaned and re-greased/lubricated all rear diff joints and bearings did the trick (not straighaway but worked in). Also slight rear judder on sudden acceleration at motorway speed fixed at same time. Old lubricant consistency of thick peanut butter.

Re: Any ideas?
Oh yes, tyres, Pyrelli P-zeros tread is too wide, rubs on strut.
Re: Any ideas?
Let me elaborate on strut tightening, there is a nut under the arch that attaches a strut from inside the body work, that is the one that needs period tightening on my RS2.

Many thanks for all the ideas, will check the strut at the w/e. Warning light on diff has gone out (?!) but will get my local mechanic to check out diff lube (& strut). Otherwise, the smile is getting bigger by the drive...

Re: Any ideas?
i would still suspect your diff lock as the problem with the ruble since it may be stuck partially on, not enough to bring up the warning light all the time.
I know a few of the S2 guys have had a problem like this in the past.

Re: Any ideas?
cant remember off top of my head, best thing to do is to join yahoo groups and goto s2central and search in the message archive or join smartgroups s2 central and you can ask the S2 forum yourself.

Re: Any ideas?
i also have slight diff judder when accelerating from right hand turns and have knocking noise from n side front on bumpy roads but cant find the cause.
can you be more specific about how you solved both of these problems?
did you strip the diff if so what oil does it take.
and where exactley is this bolt
