Fuel consumption
Fuel consumption
Could I get an idea from you all on average fuel consumption readout on average mpg readout. I seem to average 15 mpg regardless of driving style/conditions/AC use. Usually get 200 miles from full to initial low fuel warning. Sorry I have not done detailed calculation.
The car has had new sparks and MAF in last 18 months. New air/fuel filter/ thermostat since I got it last summer.
No evidence of Xs fuel use except some black sooting of tailpipes. Runs well
Is this the norm or should I be replacing lambda sensor ??
The car is going in before Xmas for new exhaust cat back replacement to cure the dreaded baffle rattle on power lift off. so it would be a good time to sort.

When I first got my RS2 I was unsure of the accuracy of the computer readout, it was showing an average of 23mpg over about 20, 000 miles. So, for the first two months I kept every receipt for petrol and recorded the mileage between pitstops. I calculated that over this time it was as near as makes no difference to 23 mpg, so , in my car, the computer is spot on. I was getting about 250 miles out of a tank (to the 30 miles warning).
The type of driving was agressive motorway driving, where it was quite economical above between 80 - 100mph. In traffic I was getting about 200 miles out of a tank. Did not notice any difference with the AC on, no drop in power either !
I was tracking this closely because I was using it for commuting to work.
Car has 176,000miles with FSH. Allways used Optimax and a slug of injector cleaner every 3000 miles....
I still have the car but it is in storaqge for the next two years while I am in Dubai, I am missing it terribly. I am reduced to a 3l Pajero for safety reasons, handles like a wardrobe !!!. I would love to have the RS2 here to deal with these lunatics in their Mercedese, but the climate would be a bit harsh.
Have seen a few S4's but no RS2's yet, is there anybody there ????
I would change the lambda probe, if it is idling a little low or unsteady then also change the speed sensor, new plugs allways make a difference.
Regards
PAUL

Alaister, to my simple mind, I fully admit to a large dose of cluelessness where engine technicalities are involved, re-mapping would show you where the fuel delivery may be excessive and if there is a problem then would improve performance as well as saving you fuel costs and since Mark at Automark rebuilt my engine, he's based at Stokesley in North Yorkshire so if you need more details let me know, it has made a significant difference to the power delivery at the top of the range.
MPG - Am I the gayest RS2 Owner....?!
No offence to any PC sensitive amongst you firstly re the title. But I've just got back from a 1200 mile round trip abroad in the RS2. Fully loaded up with wife and 2 kids and all the luggage there was space for - and I got 25 MPG for most of the run... which I thought was excellent all things considered.
That was motorway driving - 80-105 mph. The computor said 23 - but I filled it and checked against the odometer... so very happy about that.

RE: MPG - Am I the gayest RS2 Owner....?!
Mine has improved with new lambda.

RE: MPG - Am I the gayest RS2 Owner....?!
what lambda did you get alastair ? genuine audi/vag parts or aftermarket ?
Part no would be handy as I am only getting 15-18 mpg average over time.

I am going to get a price from VAG Parts for one. As my car has now done 78K miles I think it may well benefit from a new lamda probe. Most peopple suggest that these should be replaced at 40-50K miles but it rarely gets done.

Is that from the trip or actual calculation ? Mine seems to overestimate fuel consumption. At present displaying 18mpg with correction nearer 20mpg on Optimax.scillyisles wrote:The fuel consumption average seems to stay around 22/23mpg - most of my driving is around town etc but generally not in rush hour traffic. Longer motorway runs can push the average up to 28mpg or so.
Guess the only question is what else can cause poor consumption apart from a heavy right foot.

Alastair, your figures are virtually identical to mine. My readout is usually 18.4 or so on average, but when I actually calculate the mpg from fill up to fill up it is about 20.5mpg. A lot of my journeys are short around town, and I have noticed that lots of stop switch off restarts really kill the consumption.
A recent fairly rapid motorway journey averaged abot 23.5 mpg over 400miles. Never seen anything like 28mpg unless have been stuck in traffic moving at a steady 60mph.
It would appear our RS2s are very similar in a lot of ways being just 4 VIN numbers apart.
It will be interesting to see what I get after Mihnea has done the remap, my past experience is that you get quite a good improvement with a custom map tuned to your individual car.
If yours has had a new Lamda already it does not look like that will do much to improve my consumption then.

Hi Glyn Fuel economy after remap will be more or less the same but you'r torque and bhp will improve.GlynG60 wrote:Alastair, your figures are virtually identical to mine.
