Stalling

I am potentially buying an RS2 that I have known for some years. It's basically in pretty good shape but there is a problem where when the cooling fan cuts in the whole car stops running, just as though someone has turned off the ignition. If the AC is running and therefore the fan is turning already, it does not cut out. If we add a jump pack to the battery then it does not cut out either. We have tried a new battery but no difference. It's almost as though the start up of the fan draws so much current it that there is not enough left to run the car, but adding the jump pack gives enough in reserve. Any help would be most welcome please.
