this car is heavy!
we got power but our cars are heavy. what do you think about 'loosing some weight' ?
lets start to list ,where can we gain loose some weight
-rear 5th door may be replaced with fiber
-rear glasses may be replaced with lexan/polycarbon
....
what else?

air con
sound pproofing
carpets
door cards
stereo
rear seats
abs
Carbon bonnet
But don't do this to an RS2 - that is a waste - get an S2 and strip it bare.

Re: this car is heavy!
To make it handle better at the same time you'd need to loose the weight up front as much as possible.
Best options IMO:
-carbon hood (already mentioned) maybe 10 kg saving
-carbon wings while you are at it
-ultra light wheels will help handling as well
-lighter driver + passenger seats (easy 30-40 kilos)
Still if you want to go faster in an RS2, the cheaper route is power power power , carbon costs indecent amounts of cash.

Lighter battery as well...
Someone quite wise once told me that if you increase power, you gain once i.e speed.
If you reduce weight you gain threefold, i.e speed, braking and handling.....

Hee hee. Not necessarily speed, but certainly acceleration
Get a 205gti and strip that instead

Re: this car is heavy!
I think geting s2 coupe is best idea , is much smaller and lighter, engine and other bits look the same so it should be strait forward to make it rs2 coupe.I just bought s2 and and planning to folow Doug's idea. You can buy good s2 coupe for 5k to 8k and make it rs2 315 hpb for about 4k, i think this is gr8 idea.
just cant get enough of it
Re: this car is heavy!
Robo - If you want an S2 coupe upto better than standard RS2 spec - or at least engine wise - this is what you need:
RS2 Turbo (I sold reconditioned one for £350)
RS2 Manifold (I sold a new one for £320)
RS2 Injectors - though you can get even bigger ones - these are cheaper and becasue you will probably get a full custom remap these are a good choice - £250 for bigger Bosch.
You have to make sure you have the metal laminated headgasket - £25 for that but might as well get some headwork done - or at least checked if you have to take the head off. New headbolts - £45 or ARP head studs £110 needed as well.
If you are going to push the RS2 turbo to its safe limit - around 370bhp and 600Nm torque (Mihnea can give you more accurate figures) then you will be advised to get a better fuel pump - A Bosch Mortorsport one - £145 + £70 of fitting parts.
RS2 Intercooler - I'm not sure how much these are - £400?
You don't need the RS2 crossmember - that is a waste of money - just get a new bracket welded on the S2 one.
And finally the full custom Remap - I can only recommend Mihnea - S2tuner on here - excellent value for money and is is more knowledgable in the 5 pot tuning than anyone else I have heard of in theis country or abroad.
So for a minimum of £1500 + remap you could have a monster RS2 spec engine. Of course you can go further, like changing to RS2 cams, RS2 MAF, bigger turbo, etc, etc
Out of interest were you thinking your 4K of mods are going to get you? Maybe start a new thread for this?

Re: this car is heavy!
hmmm
let me start from beginning: i live in istanbul Turkey.we have 3(three) rs2 and 1(one) s2.owner of s2(my x car for a month) thinks that his car is rs2 cause it has some rs2 stickers in the cockpit and on the front grille.i ve tried to explain him the truth but he doesnt want to believe..so leave him as is..
one of the rs2's are modified up to teeth by mtm and owner is asking around 40000euros..this one is red
blue one: i dont know too much about this one but it is also highly modified.
third one is my car.
so i have no chance to buy a s2 to strip, actually i have no change to buy another performance turbo audi from mid- 90's.Cause we dont have !!!
now why i am spending time about tuning my car is:
it costed 34000euros untill now(from 01-9-2003).two three weeks ago i reaily gave up from the engine failures and decided to trade my car but noone is seriously interested about it.most of the galleries see my car as a audi 80.the highest amount offered me in a trade was 15000 euros...
now i cant sell it to that price, dont want to loose 19K for 4000kms. I will keep it but it has to go a bit faster..
being faster needs: more power and less kg right?
i can afford 420 hp upgrade, plus i dont believe our gas will tolerate the higher applications.so that should be my limit
loosing wieght: i have some backround from boating.i know how to make molds and fabricate fiber stuff.
lets say 1300 kg + 420 hp + nos for emergency (100-150hp wet)
then it may be better to drive.i live alone,no kids,no wife .thats why i dont care about the rear seat ,rear windows,ac etc etc..
this is just an idea for the moment , we will see

Re: this car is heavy!
I played with the S2 Coupe previously, before I got the RS2 -here's my own biased BTDT-view:
The engine is the easy bit in the S2, especially if you get an ABY-engined car. These also usually have the 6-speed gearbox, which can handle more power than 3B's 5-speed. Anyway, 350 hp is quite easy, and not that expensive either.
If you want the S2 to look more modern, you need the RS2 front end, plus mirrors. Bigger wheels as well. Interior needs some nicer seats, stock S2 items aren't very supportive. Some serious $$$ if you want the RS2 seats, best settle for some light Recaros.
Now comes the hardest parts: brakes and suspension. I could be really rude about S2 Coupe stock suspension and brakes, but suffice to say they are bad. Endless wollowy (is that a word? ) understeer. Brakes have no real bite, and fade horribly in serious driving. No fun at all.
OK, brakes can be fixed, look at www.bira.org to do it cheaply, and www.movit.com to do it with a large bugget.
The suspension is harder. S2 coupe is quite a rare car, and old already, so it's difficult to find an after market suspension to it that is worth something. Most are either too soft and low, leaving too little travel. Dampers, springs changed, you probably need stiffer rear ARB as well.
In the end you've spent the same amount of money that would have gotten you an RS2 to start with. It has the brakes, exterior, seats, suspension and engine sorted -plus it's the genuine item, likely to hold value better than out and out tuned S2.
I've at least been very pleased that the RS2 has most bits sorted at the factory. But then if you want to do it as a hobby, and you are skilled, then the S2 project might be the best options. Besides it's only got 2 doors, which is a plus if you young and single

Re: this car is heavy!
Hi,
don´t think the car is to heavy. Try to go for a big turbo and you will be surprised what this car can do. f you want to go beyond 400hp it get´s pretty expensive if it´s done properly. I´m driving a S2 which is faster than a Porsche Turbo and that´s a lot of fun.
Regards

What modifications at your S2?
Thanks,
Ricardo

Re: this car is heavy!
Everything is done on the engine in terms of modification. I think I can´t do more.
Don´t know how to attach a pic?!?
