rattle from the sump area

Post by simrs » Thu Mar 04, 2010 7:54 pm

Hi all
Got a rattling noise from the sump area. Sounded like a chain touching something. My garage says could be the oil pump but I've never heard of this. Any ideas?
Thanks

This may not sound logical but tighten your auxiliary belts.

Test before doing this by pouring a little water bit by bit onto the running belts whilst listening to the rattle. Sounds crazy I know but just give it a whirl!

Hi Lloyd
Thanks, I'll try that. But already I think your theory is right as I haven't driven for a few days and the car has been in temperatures of -10 C. Now there's no noise so I think with the cold the belts have retracted temporarily. Anyway fingers crossed and I'll tighten them when it's warmer!!

They do make some horrible noises sometimes, them belts. Silicon spray is a another good trick (I just haven't had time to change them, thats what you get with FASH).
Good luck
