Difficulty engaging 2nd gear when changing down from 3rd...
As I put a few more miles on the clock a few little gremlins are appearing on the car, none of which are serious but most are worthy of a bit of tweaking.
The latest one I've noticed is difficulty in changing down from 3rd to 2nd when I'm wanting to boot it past a line of traffic (as I discovered yesterday). The problem is that it just doesn't seem too happy engaging in 2nd. It gets there eventually but, for obvious reasons, I want this particular to change to be really precise.
Anyone got any ideas what this might be and has anyone else experienced the same? I've not experienced any prblems changing between any of the other gears.

Well the gearbox is a little obstructive but I have to say I have never needed to go down to 2nd to overtake a line of traffic from 3rd
I just boot it in 3rd unless you are under 30mph. Gearboxes are very strong on the RS2 & the only thing I did on getting mine was change the fluid.

Erm, my guess is worn syncromesh. You may find the car is also slow to engage 1st from second. Solution? Time to recondition your gearbox.darkhorse1210 wrote:As I put a few more miles on the clock a few little gremlins are appearing on the car, none of which are serious but most are worthy of a bit of tweaking.

True it pulls well in 3rd but the traffic was slow and a straight hill was approaching (with a bend at the top) so really want that short, sharp blast that 2nd gives.alastairg wrote:Well the gearbox is a little obstructive but I have to say I have never needed to go down to 2nd to overtake a line of traffic from 3rdI just boot it in 3rd unless you are under 30mph. Alastair...sounds like you've moved on from the RS2?

Nope.
Just had a mid ownership crisis re space for children. Just spent two weeks driving our Freelander on holiday. On return the RS2 has been a blast to drive. All suspension sorted & ice cold A/C.
Tempted by a 535d touring until I left one for dead on the A66 & my brother (who ownes one & a 645i) admitted to getting <20mpg around London. BTW his 645i also struggled to keep up on a 'convoy blast' from Inverness to Harrogate. The RS2 is difficult if not impossible to replace.
