Air con problems

Post by trevithick » Sat May 30, 2009 6:06 pm

The problem being it doesn't work.
The light comes on and the fan runs but the compressor isn't engaging. i've put 12 v to the comp. and it engages fine.
I've noticed that relay 6 is missing, I swapped the horn relay into the position and it engages but still no compressor.
Has anyone got an idea of what is wrong and does anyone have a wiring diagram for this system, that would help (I'm an electrical engineer so I stand a fighting chance).
HELP its' a black car and the summer's comming and we're getting a bit hot.
Cheers

Hi
A common fault it's the multifuzzi F76 sensor located under the inlet manifold on the water rail.
You can see the F76 here:http://www.audisportclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114

The multifuzzi F76 it's used for the water gauge on the dashboard and......
to protect the engine if overheated by disengaging the aircon compressor until the temperature comes to normal value.
Sometimes it stays triggered in that protection position so your aircon does'nt kick in.
It's easy to find out if the F76 it's the cause of your fault:
Loose gently the rubber cap and pull off one wire per time if the air con kicks in on loosing one of them you got it.
You have then two options:
1) change the F76 (quite expensive)
2) live the wire loose and just be careful in very high temperature to keep an eye on the water temp gauge.

On my old S2 i left the wire detached for years without any problem (and i live in Italy...)

Hope the reason of your fault it's this anyway.

You didn't do what dad said, did you?

"The air con gets tired but an annual recharge is about £40." It's in Vol 27 of my pre-sale ramblings :D

It's just the seals getting old. Use it constantly - yes even in the winter - to keep the seals awake and it should just need one recharge a year. I asked Audi to put dye in it last time to identify the leak, but they reckoned they couldn't.

You still on for Sunday at Goodwood?

Marvellous.

AIRC the RS2 has a different A/C connection type than modern Audis and therefore your Audi dealer might find it difficult to connect to the high and low pressure side of the A/C system in order to refill the system and put the dye in.
With the right connection it is no problem - my system has dye in it to detect for leaks but I do remember my Audi dealer having this problem until the right connector was obtained.

I've managed to get some gas in it so I've got cold air now. The fittings are standard quick release ones from the local air con people.
I'll have a go with the dye etc next week and see what damage I can do!
Goodwood hope so but I have a knackered exhaust manifold and racing slicks now, so I may have to save my pennys. Lets hope some of my clients decide to chough up, if not it'll be SORN.
