Tyre Calculator
I ummed and ahhed over the tyres for while having read stacks of advice on various forums but it was this that finally sealed the decision for me:
http://www.alloywheels.com/tyrecalc.asp
If you punch in the original tyre details (245/40/17) and then the tyres dimensions I finally went for (225/45/17) you will find that they are the closest match in terms of rolling radius.
I went for Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics and they grip like hell, I would strongly recommend them.
