You're right - tyre tech has moved on leaps since 1993.
But, I can think of many reasons why some people may choose to buy a tyre like this. Imagine a very low mile example of the RS2 with a nearly full set of original OEM tyres - worth it to a collector, no?
I think it would be great to 'collect' a full set of unused OEM tyres to go along with the original brochure, magazine articles, original purchase receipt etc etc.....
If you're into driving your car however, yes a newer up to date set is clearly the way to go!

Hmm well I have all the magazine articles/press paper cuttings on the car, have the original order faxes and communications from Audi in Germany to my dealer etc, plus all the original receipts, plus multiple copies of sales brochures etc and my RS2 is very low mileage and as original in terms of modifications but IMHO a set of original OEM tyres is not a big issue.
The other thing to bear in mind is that tyres deteriorate over time and I believe the recommended life span for a tyre particularly one rated at the RS2 load/speed level is max 5 years so given that the tyre has been out of production for at least 5 years - the tyre is junk anyway.

Audi RS2 - the original
Well I think you've made it quite clear you're not into adding a set of original tyres for your collection!
Nevertheless, tyres can and do last for far longer than 5 years.
Especially if they've been stored on their side and out of sunlight.
ie: I bet there are a few unused spares around that have never been out
of the spare wheel well.
