Running costs for an RS2

Post by edhont » Sun Dec 14, 2008 7:18 am

Hi,
I'm thinking about buying an RS2. Was doubting between E34 M5 Touring and RS2. After some research found out that running costs of the M5 are too high.

So my question: What are the average (annual) running costs of an RS2.
Is it an expensive car to maintain?

Thanks in advance,

Emanuel hi,
the rs2 has lots to give even for a 14 year old car.Running costs are not high once the car is fully serviced and updated.By that i mean when it is brought in a fully operating condition engine wise, brakes, etc.
The engine if never been serviced fully, meaning taking the head off and replacing all flanges,as well as piston rings etc that may be needed if the Kms are too high.It all depends on how many kms it has done and what the oil consumption is.

Further more, brake discs are pretty expensive, but there are discs cheaper on ebay which are just as good.
You will need to have the belts changes if they havent done that recently just to be on the safe side, and that takes quite some time as well.
Finally you will have to know that if the turbo has never been serviced as well and the kms are above 120-150K then you will need to have it serviced, and possibly the exhaust manifold may have cracks.

To conclude you are looking at an initial 2-4Keuro/gbp costs to refresh the car depending on what has been done before. If that is done, then basically you only need to worry about oil changes until the next belt change(every 60K kms).Odd things may also appear like steering leaks or something and possibly shocks, and bushes, but those are expendeble and they would be changed anyway at some point.Bushes are pretty much good and may last a long time.again if never changed, they may need it.

Most of us can tell you horror stories, Emanuel.

My car was very nice when I bought it and now, well into my second year of ownership, it is even better. If I add together all costs for a year, excluding the purchase price and depreciation, and divide by 52 it costs me £200 a week to run. But that really is everything, including insurance, petrol and a very nice set of mats :D

At 142,000+ miles, it has started to use oil and, as Vas suggests, work on the engine may be required soon.

Having said that, it is worth it. I have never regretted buying it.

Sorry, you said annual, didn't you?

£10,000, all in for 10,000 miles. Yup, a pound a mile.

To get that in context, a couple of years ago I saw an advert for a one owner 1995 Aston Vantage; the one with Aston's own V8 and twin superchargers. £180,000 new, for sale at £80,000 with 4,000 miles on it and FAMSH. Depreciation alone is £25 per mile!!

The Vantage would get you to 60 0.3 of a second quicker and can go 10mph faster.

These days - setting aside the dip in all second hand car values recently with the world's financial woes - depreciation is normally not too much of a worry with the RS2. And you can carry more than the average Aston.
