OEM spare tyres I WANT THEM

Post by alastairg » Mon Apr 21, 2008 12:21 pm

How many here like me have or had an unused OEM Dunlop 8080 245/40 17 on the spare. If you have let me know as I would like to run the car on OEM rubber at least once during my ownership.
Clearly I will pay a suitable amount.

And before anyone ponits it out I will be checking each tyre for age related problems. My spare is pristine as its been stored in the dark & dry i.e. the spare wheel

Good experiment, I'm up for that, Alastair, though I don't recognise the 8080. Without going and looking, I'm fairly sure mine says SP8000.

Where would this clandestine exchange take place?

I'll take my pink specs off and have a good hard look at the tyre at the weekend to make sure it's okay for you. If it is, you're welcome to buy or swap it.

Still need tyres. I will only use unused ones due to age. Any offers please PM.

How's the tyre experiment going, Alastair?

Did you get the four SP8000s you were looking for?

Shame! This is such a good experiment, too.

Everybody go look in the boot this weekend and see if your spare is an unused SP8000.

If it is, contact Alastair.

Whilst I can understand your curiosity to drive an RS2 on the original OEM tyres, I can say that having owned an RS2 from new and having gone through two sets of OEM Dunlop SP8000s I think you will find there is no real difference between running the car on these tyres and the modern 225/45ZR17 equivalents. Indeed, I would say that tyre technology has moved on somewhat and modern 225/45ZR17 tyres give better overall performance than the OEM Dunlop SP8000. In my experience based on driving on the same roads, I find my current Pirelli Nero 225/45ZR17 give much more precision and less body roll than the OEM Dunlop SP8000s.

Yes I know but my recent pirelli nero set (number two) have been cr*p with high spots on the tyres leading to vibration. Anyway I am still up for this experiment but have ordered 5 new Goodyear Asym 225/45 94Y XL to try (cannot argue with £83 per corner with VAT & delivery)

Hi Alastair,

I've got an unused OEM spare tyre - rubber pimples the works...

Not thinking about selling it though tbh as represents a bit of history
to go with the car. It's currently lying flat in our attic. :)

Good luck with your search.

Oh, man! Don't do that to him! Sell it to him, the bloke needs your tyre.

It's no good in the attic.

There is a Plan B, of course.

Get all the owners with one unused SP8000 together on one day at a circuit somewhere and swap round. Everyone gets a turn driving their car with a set of SP8000s and the tyres all go back to their owners afterwards, not too badly worn.

I'd go just to see it even if I can't join in.

I can understand that as I kept mine on the spare until last year !! I think only a full set would really represent a bit of history
