Angus. Unfortunately my paricular unit does not pick up speed cameras - it is a few years old. I have no idea whether the latest versions do or not.

I have a Micro Road pilot for the cameras, and need to get a laser diffuser for the dodgy-scopes.......

Depending on the head unit you want to fit I think there are adaptors out there, for example the Audi A6 94-02 adaptor (PC9-401) here:
https://www.bluespot.co.uk/install/show_model.asp?id=17
This converts things back to standard ISO plugs by the look of it.
Thanks for that it looks like the right sort of thing, I'll give it a go.

Speakers all went in today.

MB Quart RSC 210 components in the dash. A bit of a fiddle with a hack saw blade to get them sitting nice and flush, but no big problems. Tweaters fitted in the demist vents perfectly. Wiring was fairly straight forward with the crossovers tucked up above the glove box. The MB Quart's were courtesy of Shirish who found them very reasonably on ebay, which I also benefited from. Sadly Shirish never managed to fit them to his RS2 before it got nicked.

As I'm not running an amp (yet) I decided not to go too posh on the rears and got some Infinity Reference components which where very easy to fit and wire up. However i left the original OEM tweaters in place (thanks for the idea Dean) as the Infinity ones are a bit small and would have looked messy. I will eventually get round to finding/making some adaptors for the infinity ones.

The speakers alone have made a huge difference, especially up front, can't wait to get the head unit in. Having said that the Becker Grand Prix head unit is not available at the moment but it is on order and should be with me in about 3 weeks.

Thanks for all your advice guys, it really made the world of difference.

When I was driving back down the M6 when I collected my current car I flicked on the radio. I remember thinking how poor the stock system sounded bearing in mind it was a top of the line £48k car when new........

Just back from 4 weeks away and have treated myself to a Becker Grand Prix head unit and a pleasant afternoon of tinkering and fitting the unit. The Becker Grand Prix comes with blue tooth and a microphone and works as a hands free unit. I also opted for the ipod adapter that displays the ipod track info on the head unit. All very nice and looks very OEM!

With the Becker unit and the MB Quarts speakers, I now have decent sound for the first time ever in any car I have had and what a difference it has made, should have done it ages ago.

Thanks to all the top tips in this thread (particularly the gala connection and the swapping of positive terminals in the iso connector ) it was fairly painless process and could even be described as straight forward. Fortunatley i had a few spare terminals knocking about which made things much easier for rewiring the iso connecter. I didn't do the ingnition switch trick (well i don't think i did), but found that this unit turns its self off anyway once the engine is turned off and can be turned on again without they key in the ignition (so maybe i did without knowing).

Cheers guys!!

I have been really pleased with my Becker Mexico Pro headunit. The sound quality is very good. The integrated Bluetooth on the Grand Prix sounds like an excellent idea. I had to fit a seperate Parrot bluetooth handsfree kit.
Fitting certainly is pretty straight forward - certainly when compared to fitting a certain coolant hose

You mean this new addition:

:D

Yes I'm loving it. Quite different to the RS2 in the way the power is delivered etc. Still getting used to it and running it in. Will do a full RS2 vs. RS4 road test in due course.
I guess I am going to have to sell the RS2 soon, just putting it off for now. May be I will try and persuade my wife to sell her Golf instead? :?

Just to check. You do need to remove the rear door card to replace the speakers or can you avoid this ??

You have to remove the rear door cards in order to release the speakers, which are held in place by 3 or 4 screw. The same goes for the tweeters although they have a retaining ring that unscrews. All very straight forward.

Incidentally, if you are going the component route, there is just enough room behind the door cards to fix the crossover units, although finding a tweeter that is large enough to fill the OEM tweeters "hole" is a bit of a challenge. I ended up keeping the OEM tweeters and leaving it for another day to resolve.

Bringing this old thread up again but where did you mount the IPOD kit? If it was in the glovebox how did you get the wire in there without sacrificing the glovebox light? I just took that out and routed the wire through there but it's hardly ideal and I don't want to start cutting things.
Also where did you route/mount the microphone for the bluetooth connectivity?

I just routed the Ipod cable in from the back on the right hand side. There is sort of a gap there that does not get closed when you open and close the glovebox. If you undo all the screws that hold the glovebox in place, remembering the ones at the bottom/back, you can drop down the glovebox completely which gives you good access to the back of the headunit whilst in place.
The easiest place to mount the phone microphone is at the top of the A pillar trim, probably adjacent to one of you alarm sensors. I was going to route to a central position by the courtesy light / rear view mirror so as to give good reception to the passenger seat also, but it works just fine at the top of the A pillar. Running the wire up here is easy - just pull the driver's door rubber seal away and you can then lift up the edge of the A pillar trim to push the wire behind.
I hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice Glyn, if it ever stops raining I'll go and have a crack at it. Sounds a lot neater than the bodge job I've done.
