Hi,I´ve just got back to my car(in germany) after a holiday,and it will not start it fires up for a few seconds and then cuts out. After a phone call to a local audi specialist he said it was the chip in the key that was at fault and to try the spare(which i left in england and have no way of getting for the next 2 weeks,stupid i know)Has any one had this problem before and are there chips in the keys,I didn´t know they did that on older cars.Thanks for your help on this.

RE: Chips in keys
The key does have a chip in it. There are certain key cutting places that can make copies of your key and copy the chip as well. My local Audi dealership pointed me to this place as they couldn't get a copy done.

This doesn't really help you though ... sorry. Unless you can find a key cutter in Germany than can read the chip in your faulty key or perhaps they have a device that can read the one in the car.

open and close one of the front doors with the key (i mean mechanical opening not infrared) the trasponder ecu should recognize in this way the key
if it does'nt work loose one of the battery connections and leave the car without electricity for at least five minutes then connect it back this is the procedure to come to a clear point for all the systems
be careful don't leave the key inside then open the car as above
check that when you switch the ignition on the icon with the key goes off after few seconds if it does and the car does'nt start i think (my opinion)
that the problem it's not the key or any part related to it
let me know...Ciao Stefano
