Hi Oilman - Quick question re:Ester based oil. I used to use Silkolene Pro-R 15w-50 in my R34 which was an Ester based oil and I thought it was fantastic. Now I've had a few Audi's and people constantly refer to "it's got meet spec" when dealing with oil.

Can you see why something like this Millers Nanodrive shouldn't be used over a VAG spec'd 504/507/505.01 etc when I would have thought that the ester based oil, at the same weight, would be much better in our highly tuned V6/8/10's.

I get the feeling that, while the same long-life oil thats put into a diesel A6 will work, it isn't going to the very best oil for a 740hp V10, so I'm looking for the best performing oil in 5w-30 or 5w-40 from Miilers/Royal Purple/Silkolene Pro-R (or what-ever it's called now) etc.

Hi

If you want the best protection, get away from the Audi spec oils and go for an ester based 5w-40. The VW oils are designed to help with emissions systems and longlife service intervals in standard cars, rather than the best protection. If your car is making 740bhp, it's likely to be running hotter than a standard car, so a 5w-40 makes sense. An ester based oil will give better protection than a normal oil, but needs to be changed annually or at 10k, whichever comes first.

Out of those, the ester ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition.

Cheers
