Post by Tuddie » Tue Feb 28, 2017 5:19 pm

I'd imagine you'd get similar results to the S6 and S7 in terms of power so might be worth looking googling some of them.

The S8 is already 520 ish Mike - well above the S6 S7.

I drove the current S8 a while back and it was hilarious. I still think of all the I've been in over the years, it was the D3 W12 that surprised me the most. Felt way over the quoted 450 bhp. You just do not expect an 8 to move like that..... nor do other road users!

Yes but isn't it the same engine that has been tuned more from factory? I assumed it was the same engine with a different map. Or are there hardware differences between them?

Could be just a tune - I'm not 100% sure to be honest. What I meant was that you don't be able to get the 100+ bhp gains of the S6 with 'just' a map, because the car is already 520. The S6 has definitely 'pegged' stock by Audi with their choice of the S tronic gearbox

Aha, I meant the max bhp and torque would be close to a tuned S6 rather than the same gain, ie less gain but similar totals.

Ahhh forgive me, yes that makes complete sense

The main difference would probably boil down to the gearbox change up point (effectively the redline, governed by the gearbox not the engine, with the S6 having the S tronic an the S8 having the Tiptronic)

With your RS6 performance, didn't Audi just up the boost a small amount and raise the change up point by a couple hundred rpm?

I think so. We were discussing this a few days ago, Audi made no announcement of any hardware changes so most likely just an increase in boost and when remapped it will probably be no different to a remapped non performance model.

Do you reckon the S8 is just an RS6/7 detuned i.e same turbos just running less boost or a different map?

No there are definite hardware differences between the S6 and RS6 engine. I'll try to dig them out later.
A tuned S6 will roughly equal a standard RS6 engine.

What im taking from this is that mine is basically a tuned S6 engine with 520 bhp and the RS6/7 engine is upgraded more than this?

The 4.0 tfsi self study guide describes the S6/S8 engine in detail. It quotes the key differences between the S8 and the S6 as being:
• Air induction for both cylinder banks
• Power steering pump
• Engine cover design
• Different installation location of the secondary air pump motor (right side of engine compartment)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/741 ... 0study.pdf

I've seen MRC quote about 600ps for a mapped S8.

And apparently the RS6 turbo will bolt straight onto an S6/S8 engine.

Thanks Mike. Will take a while to digest that lot lol. I notice APR have figures quoted at 670bhp which is interesting. I know its not all about figures but how it actually drives. Apparently they make 580bhp and are under quoted from the factory at 520 bhp according to a YouTube video think its the smoking tire series i viewed.

I wouldn't be surprised, most Audi S and RS turbo'd cars produce more power than quoted by Audi.
