P.S. Thanks Paul, if we can do both that would be great, out with you and then you out with me would be cool...
P.P.S. I will bring my Vagcom in case anyone wants to fiddle with anything or check for faults before they go out or come home... Jason

No probs Jason, more than happy to.

The only advice & i'm far from an expert is to build the pace up gradually, don't be scared, but don't be too brave either, as Nordschleife demands respect & if she's given it you'll be fine & have a blast. The only other caveat is although you'll have no oncoming traffic (unless you're facing the wrong way), over use your wing mirrors as almost anything could be approaching you at high speeds. Most drivers will of course respect other drivers on the track, but plenty will be gunning it & they may take risks you really don't want to be part of, so better to let them go & come home safe.

So what is the case with insurance ... if you policy specifically excludes the Nordschleife, and track days insurance, if you get it is not 3rd party either, does this make it illegal to drive there?? No 3rd party insurance?

I think its just a case of No Insurance, not illegal... I have had my chap talking to N.U. today, they will do "track day Insurance" at a cost for uk but will not cover track days abroad.

AFAIK, if your policy specifically makes reference to no cover for Nurburgring, Nordschleife or de-restricted toll roads, then you're not covered. If none of these are mentioned then you're fine (in principle). All policies that i've ever had exclude track days & racing, but none have ever made reference to Nordschleife, so i'm assuming i'm covered. Got my insurance cover extended to cover the European Countries it's expected i'll visit during the trip so i'm fine & dandy i hope.

So, if your polcy excludes it, track day cover is not enough, since you require 3rd party for a toll road/public road?

I'd say that Track Day Cover specifically for The Ring would be more than sufficient, although by my experience, Track Day Cover is a rip off.

If your policy specifically excludes The Ring, then you will no doubt need some level of cover to remain legal & as above i'd assume Track Day Cover would be more than enough.

Jason,

I do believe that someone is trying to scare you here. As said, its awesome to drive, but you don't have to race or put yourself at risk. They even drive buses around the Ring for tourists so you will be OK. Just use your mirrors alot and think even more. Take someone around with you in the passenger seat for the first few laps. Its great to do and fun, relax and you will enjoy it.

Just make sure its a level headed person who knows a little more than most when you take your first drive.

It will blow you away like nothing you have ever done.

Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Just like i said

Respect for the track/conditions, plenty of mirrors & don't go mad, follow those 3 & you'll be just fine & dandy. As said, the whole experience is one you'll never forget, both on & off the track. The atmosphere is one to savour, as it's basically the European Petrol Head Mecca 8)

Not sure if it is the same but track day insurance for bikes only covered complete right offs, not broken bits, panel damage etc, so check this first if you decide to go ahead with that option and see how it applies to cars.

It actually works out next to useless unless you right off the bike which with run-off, kitty litter and nothing coming the other way is pretty much impossible.

What I was trying to say id ask the likes of DavidT to sit with you, I am NO expert and wouldn't want to misguide you in any way.

It really is the most exhillerating this you have done in a while, but worth every moment.

Forget doing it in any times, or racing that 320i that looks battered, just enjoy it in your own time and pace.

Also if you get the chance, hop into other members cars and see how they do it, it also gives you a different perspective of the track.

Its just GREAT!

and if your doing the filming for the driver make sure your sitting correctly..i have a great 10 min vid of the tree tops and clouds when my mate done mine...its not a sprint its a marathon..your hands will get sweaty and it gets very tireing so stay alert and watch out for motorbikes..oh and sabine..
look past the corner and you will go around it..look at the car in front and you will miss the corner and crash..6-10ft of grass before the armco..
enjoy..its addictive for sure... :jump:
