Tyre tread minimum

Post by Timster » Tue Oct 02, 2012 4:05 pm

Tread getting very low on my Vredesh1ts.

Was hoping to do the Spa track days on these before fitting new tyres, upon returning.
Just been given an "advisory" during MOT. They're down to 3mm and frankly the car's understeering all over the place.
Should I be looking at putting a new set BEFORE monday or risk the very worn Vredesh1ts.
Didn't really want to waste a new set of tyres on the track !

First time on the track so I don't want to pile into the armco OR do you reckon 3mm should be ok ?

Cheers

Dont waste new tyres on track, those should be fine, drop pressures when hot and should be ok.

You could buy the tyres and take them to spa, rsr tyres will be there on the day and could fit them
For you for the drive home perfect excuse to destroy your old tyres :)

 Cheers sonny, I like your thinking

They just feel so cr*p at the moment that I don't want to spoil the experience with no grip.

Hmmm well if in doubt then change them, but what would you change them for? Iv heard that there not the greatest of track tyres.

It may be down to your driving style too. We shall play with pressures at Spa mate and make the most out of what we have. Spa is not really a massive braking circuit so tyres wont wont get as hot as say somewhere like Silverstone etc

My next road tyres were going to be the F1 Asymetric 2's .... I think that's what everyone recommends these days ??
(obviously didn't want to fit them and then track the car)

* was there more than one model of Asymetric 2 ?

Tue AND Wed.

The Vreds were always much better in the wet than the dry.... but not so sure with only 3mm !?!?!?
They go off very quickly when hot.

Just one model of Asymmetric 2 - they are all XL as standard. I've got them on mine and it turned the car into what I always wanted it to be - the comparison with the previous Dunlops (the best of which was still about 4 - 5mm!) was night and day

Goodyears however infamously take a while to run in / for the release agent to come away. One of the mods on Tyresmoke did a 360 in his Fabia vRS years ago at the first roundabout after the tyre fitters on brand spanking new GSD3s. I had my Asymmetric 2s fitted at the same time I had my resonated pipes taken out, bad idea!! Driving it like a loon, enjoying the noise at ever opportunity, firing it out of roundabouts the traction control was flashing on the dash all the time, could feel; the car moving around. I would say Tim don't under any circumstances take brand new Eagles on track, it could end in tears!!!

If you have never rotated the Vreds Tim, have a look at them and see if you could put the rears on the front as the outside shoulders might be less worn, give you more bite and less understeer

yeah, was going to rotate them anyway.

The Vreds were very glassy for about 1500 (yes 1500 miles) from new.
