I would say have a few UK trackdays under your belt before going to the ring.

Lads trip Leon ;)
In fairness to you Leon, I should expand on the first point:

I had done probably 20 trackdays, test days, some rally navigation and varius other bits and pieces when I first went to the ring.

My first few laps were a blur for a number of reasons. The track is narrow, bumpy & not marshalled. The mix of vehicles and the speed differentials are incredible - you really need someone to watch your mirrors because things happen very fast. The scariest thing for me was bikes, the proximity of them when they pass / you pass them scared the life out of me. The track is also long and a few laps have you thinking you know bits of it, which is very dangerous.

If you read the ring forums, you will see that the place leaves a mark on new and experienced visitors alike. Mostly repairable, but sometimes not.

Just my 2p, I'm very interested to hear what people think.

so what are you all doing insurance-wise or are you not bothering with it? It appears very very few companies insure for the ring.. Got to say I won't be going unfortunately unless I can resolve this.

I would have to comment that the Ring does not really compare to a track day.

Having been last year, the differance in cars, bike yeas and coaches is vast, you will not be able to master or race the ring for a long time.

Treat it with respect, learn the circuit, watch the cars and have the pleasure in driving one of the most exciting and beautiful tracks ever built, and enjoy the buzz that will never go away.

Act like a prat and you will pay the penalty, in more ways than just money.

Most of the people I have meet on this site are not prats, and have had the time of there lives.

You can get you car damaged driving to the shops, 14 miles of undulating hills and blind corners, is something that I will never forget.

In my eyes it is the ultimate rush.

The ring dates are now firm for this year (so far as I can tell, I even asked Ben Lovejoy!).

We are going to get there as early as possible on Saturday (14/04) perhaps even see the end of the VLN race www.vln.de

Totally agree, that's why I said 'experience'. Not sure if its still true, but the ring used to be thought of by many as a cheap, pay as you go 'track day'.

I also agree with Chubby - great place to drive, just drive alert and within your limits

Ps I have booked the eurotunnel also now, tried to match your ferry times, so leaving folkestone at 10.20ish, arrive in Calais approx 12 o clock

For those wondering about insurance issues, just a reminder that the ring is the only one way open toll road in Germany, never been and never will be classed as a race track. So insurance has to cover any damage that happens there, because it is an open road, and if they refuse to cover something that happens there you are legally entitled to sue them IMHO.
