diesel (yes i did say diesel)
i still have my RS but have just bought the wife an A4 2.5 TDI quattro avant (180BHP).i know its not really the forum for this kind of talk but has anyone ever owned one of these.the car looks good and seams to be fine but i have read allsorts of knightmare stories of allsorts of engine problems.having said that you can find a bad story for any car. has anyone any experience of new turbos worn cams fuel distributers to name a few or are they OK cars .i only ask this because even though it goes quite well ,its not exactly rapid ,but next to my rs it isnt going to be.however that doesnt stop me thinking it could be one of the above; the car is a 2003 with 90000 miles 6 speed box ;thank john

RE: diesel (yes i did say diesel)
John, to be honest the 2.5tdi's are not the best engine Audi ever made.
Fuel pumps are a very common problem and cost the guts of a grand to repair/replace (I have replaced several on all ages of the 2.5tdi). Turbos have been known to be weak also, not to mention the usual air mass meter problems.
A 1.9tdi 130bhp is a better engine and just as fast (if not faster) with better MPG, and more tunable.
Hope this helps........

RE: diesel (yes i did say diesel)
Bro's just taken delivery of a new 3.0 TDi A6. His previous A6 had the same 3.0 TDi engine and he clocked up 99,000 miles in 2 yrs with no issues whatsoever. Perhaps the 3.0 is much more reliable than the 2.5 ?

RE: diesel (yes i did say diesel)
are there any ways of telling if mine is good or bad;seams to make all the right noises and goes quite well if not exactly fast ,are these things surposed to be quick ish or am i expecting to much.thanks again
RE: diesel (yes i did say diesel)
the 2.5 engine is ok as long as its been looked after and driven respectfully (the same as a v6 petrol) mines done 165k and still goes well, starts first time and does 45 mpg at 90 mph

RE: diesel (yes i did say diesel)
I have a B5 2.5 TDi quattro. I had similar concerns but have not experienced any of the much-advertised issues. The cam wear issue is apparently largely due to the oil pumps delivering lower than ideal pressure/supply to the top of the engine at low revs and the lazy nature of the engine means you could potentially drive thousands of miles at 1200rpm. My view on the fuel pump and turbo problems is that neither are particularly major surgery and you would be unlucky to suffer either, never mind both. With regard to comparisons with the 1.9 engine, all I can say is that I got rid of one because the price of improved fuel economy was a coarse, drony engine with a comically one-dimensional power delivery. The 2.5 is quieter, smoother, actually sounds quite nice when revving and has a turbine-like spread of power which must be a V6 turbo characteristic.
RE: diesel (yes i did say diesel)
CHEERS FOR THE ADVICE ,will kep my eye on it. by the way it does no more than 36 to37 at 85 mph on a long run
