Brakes and brake upgrades info please.

The car I'm looking at is gonna need a set of brakes by the looks of things.
I believe thats gonna be about £1000. Can anyone confirm this? Im not interested in the labour cost as I'm happy to do them myself. Why are they so expensive? It must be something to do with the limited amount made? Steel brakes and regular pads right? Nothing different to most run of the mill cars?

If I'm gonna have to spend this much money on standard stuff (which some people seem to say are not very good) it might be worth an upgrade? I know some of the upgrade stuff can be like £5000 but its just a thought. I have heard mention of people doing an RS6 conversion. How much and what is needed? Other options available?

I had a quick search but didnt see anything on this issue, I'm sure its come up before so sorry if this is covering old ground.

The sticky at the top of the board covers what's needed - RS6 calipers, and RS4 B7 disks/pads on the front, and all B7 on the back. Have a look at MRC's site for prices.

Difference over the standard stuff is night and day.
