It's easier than that mate. I used a swiss army knife to get mine unjammed.
Use the can opener blade and wedge it in the top gap. Once it's in turn the knife a few degrees which should force the release mechanism and move and trapped coins.

have the same problem but the tray stays closed after I closed it again, I must try to take it apart to see what's going on there

Glad you got it sorted k5turbo. I was happy when I got mine released and have since not put any coins in it
