EGT and Lambda questions

Seen the fault come up on the old Vag com related to Lambda B2 S1 intermittent etc and the odd EGT code related to implausible signal.
Could this be a shot MAF too that is causing this?
I had some hesitation and a little bit of smoke when I gave it WOT in third the other day with Jim behind me.
Took car to Audi stealer and they ran diagnostic and agreed that Lambda needs changing and alos EGT but at 360 notes for the Lamba and 600+ for the EGT I didn't pursue it too much.
Warrany D will cover some of it but at the Stelaers labour rates it's still a pain in the wallet.
Might take it to my specialist and get the job done by them at a lower labour rate.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
These are the codes.
17539 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor: B2 S1: Internal Resistance too High
P1131 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17867 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 2 (G236): Implausible Signal
P1459 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

I think EGT1 is the easier of the two. I replaced the awkward one on my old S4 which was a pain but do-able took me less then two hours and I am a bit of a novis.
The easier one which is on the right hand side cylinder bank looks like a pice of cake. The sensor its self is about £120 IIRC so even with if Warranty Direct dont cover the full cost i imagine an independant specialist could do the whole lot for less then £400 i.e both sensors. I see no reason why any decent garage could not do these jobs, if I could. I also think a faulty Maf can lead to the EGT expiring before its time.

on the B5 RS4 Grizz replaced my S1 B1 LAMBDA sensor ( not sure he did the EGT) though, would have to check the reciept, tell you what though.... it wasnt any where near what Audi quoted you either!! he did the MAF as well because we still had the original one in place!!

EGT2 is a pain. I wouldnt use the stealers. Go to a specialist much better service! or if you are a dab hand DIY
I'm not but never to stealers

Dhali, I take it one would need 2 of this particular sensor for B1 S1 and B2 S1? Getting a 17539 DTC too but not too worried for the moment, havent noticed any effect on performance but will have to be changed in due course...

360+600. what planet are they on. ifyou can hold a spanner then you will do it in 1-2 hrs with 200ish in the 2 parts, these will have gone because of the maf. 80 squid and 10 mins to replace.

Thanks jimbo, I take it the 360 + 600 is the cable length of each lambda for S1 of both banks? Look a right pig to get at between lambdas and EGT's. Do most of my own spanner work anyway so anything to save a few pennies

Will be doing both S1 lambdas as well as the MAF at the same time also when I get round to it. Are any of those lambdas in Dhali's link right then or have they made a boo boo somewhere with their numbers? Thanks

Sure I had a new MAF about 18 months ago at MRC but will check records. Are you saying that the B2 S1 error could be caused because of the MAF going faulty?
I want to change B2 S1 first and then see if any other codes appear. When I ran the car with VAG COM and measured certain blocks I got a max MAF reading of 308g so that seemed a little on the low side for a mapped car, I was expecting well over 330 ish.

and used a Draper oxygen sensor socket #55540 to remove/install.

A dead MAF can cause engine to run lean which causes higher exhaust gas temps and burn out sensors downstream e.g. lambda and EGT.
Replacing the MAF wont fix the lambda issue as it's killed it.
308g/s is very low for a mapped car using the BHP - g/s equation where g/s = 4/5 of BHP you are only at stock BHP.
My stock RS4 runs 310 g/s approx which is over 380 bhp according to this rule.
I had exactly this on my first RS4 with stage 2 remap
Replacing the MAF but leaving the lambda saw the g/s go back up.
I did the lambda later as this didn't seem to be affecting power or putting MIL on.
RS4#2 had new MAF but dead lambda when purchased.
I'm envious Contigo as when fixed it'll feel even better!

Just brought a new Lambda for my S8 today from GSF (Bosch Jobie) £63 inc VAT, that website lists it at £93 and Audi £130! S1 is pre cat and S2 is post cat. GSF didn't do post cats so got that 2nd hand from an A8 breaker, and only £40 to fit from a specialist ex Audi master tech (Ben hes technical director of the Audi Driver Mag and owns Avperformance in Burton On Trent, Hope this helps!

So I have not had chance top do anything with the motor as been away but I drove over 600 miles in it this weekend with mostly motorway miles and I am sure it went into Limp mode at one point as there was no turbo kick to the car.
Anyway. I ran VAG-COM on it and found the following
3 Faults Found:
17865 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 2 (G236): Open or Short to Plus
P1457 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17538 - Fuel Trim: Bank 2 (Mult): System too Lean
P1130 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17536 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Mult): System too Lean
P1128 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
I have since spoken to the missus and she confessed she put 95RON in it as SUL had sold out, would that explian the Fuel trim errors?
How can I diagnose this? Where do I start?
Thanks
Phil
