Weird sound, like diesel in my RS4

Post by Sql_RS4 » Wed May 06, 2009 8:41 pm

My car developed a weird noise coming from the front of the engine / cambelt area.

Hard to describe but it is quite noisy and sounds like if I had an extra diesel engine fit in there between a bumper and the rs4 engine.

Any ideas? Some bearings? Water pump? It is a shame it is so hard to get into there, need to dismantle everything in the front - wonder if you have any ideas before I get the bumper and whole front off? Would appreciate it.

When my new MAF arrives on saturday and eliminates slight hesitation at high revs and vibrations at idle this "diesel sound" problem will be the last to solve!

Oh and it is not camshaft etc. Slight ticking from injectors (at least that's what I've been told) but cams/camshafts should be ok. I guess this must be something else.

Maybe it the viscous fan? Try disconnecting it (if you can). Also remove your aux belt to see if this eliminates the sound.

It's not just the fan rubbing on a loose wire or cable is it?

A bearing would generally start off quiet then gradually get louder. My aircon compressor bearing is fairly shot and it's still quite a subtle thrumming sound.

I had this and it was the cambelt tensioner on nearside bank which had seized, only did it when engine was hot (80 degrees >)
If it does it cold too then you may be lucky and it could be as above..

Thanks for your answers guys.

I booked my car to a good mechanic for next wednesday - we will see then.

In my car it is quite loud and it is the same no matter if engine is hot or not.

Hope it's nothing serious.

Sup, sounds like i had something similar, initially had strange vibrations through the car and it seemed to surge in power occasionally which turned out to be a problem with one of the dv's. And more recently had a sort of ticking coming from the engine, front near side (passenger?), very apparent when cold but got slightly less when warmed up, which turned out to be a faulty valve timing unit which was allowing the chain to be slack and judder around, after much deliberating with Audi finally got them to sort it under warranty (coz it was under a year old), and now smooth and silent.

Well after inspection it looks like worn chain tensioners cause that sound.

My mechanic said it cannot be said for sure and only after you replace them you can see but he also said it would be like over 1k eur job.

Not good news.
