I'm considering buying an RS4 thats low mileage, low owners, great condition and 100% standard....

Would you modify such a car after it being standard and loved for 8 years, or would you keep it standard thinking it would also be worth more being unmolested?
Finally, would you be happy with it as standard or would you consider selling it to buy a similar car thats already had work done?

What you will find out is that there are several levels of modifications (stages). Power wise, the first step would be a remap, then exhaust, turobos, etc... I have the MTM chip and I could not be happier with the better lower end grunt (torque). My sense is that any further mods affect the day to day utility of the car so I would be careful with anything but a remap.

I used to take the car to the track 2 - 3 times a year and as long as you are mindful of the limitations, the standard brakes are fine. Same with the suspension, where you would be compromising day to day comfort otherwise.

For whatever reason, you never get back the cost of mds back through resale value so I'd first decide what you want out of the car and then look for exactly that. It is more important to look for a well maintained example to minimize your risk of expensive surprises.

The huge enjoyment and better all round driving experience from a re-map is definately worth it.

It depends what you intend to do/use the car for. If you only intend to potter about and won't use the performance that much and you don't intend to keep it that long, then by all means keep it standard if you think that will help hold it's value for longer!

But I think that the majority of buyer's for these cars now and in the future will likely be enthusiasts who will care more about how it's been maintained and would probably relish the fact that someone else has had the expense of re-mapping it. One thing for sure, after re-mapping it, it will be harder to part with, such is the huge grin factor you get from the added performance.

Considering the value these cars are currently going for, there is absolutely no alternative for me at the money that would coax me into wanting something else, as the combination of performance, quality, practicality and the absolute rarity (I still haven't met another one in central Scotland on the open road for over 2 years) means for me at least, there's no alternative!

Disagree - I have PSS9s and ARBs with support brackets and on the softest setting there is no difference in comfort to the stock set up. In fact comfort is better, less crashy ride, no pogoing down the motorway at speed - oh and the handling's a bit better too

If you buy stock, the chancers are you will "want" more power after a few months anyway. Once you get it remapped, you'll want more a few months after that. It's addictive. As mentioned above, you never recover the cost of mods so you may be better buying an already modded car.

The suspension on an 8 year old car could be past its best - I changed mine for the H&R coilovers (plus ARBs) - the ride was quite hard so they were re-adjusted to their highest setting and now they are fine - a good compromise for the track and spirited road driving!

Looks lovely but (personally speaking) I couldn't live with red. Although I think it looks great.

So currently the poll stands at: 12 think I should modify it and 1 person thinks I'd be better off selling it to buy one already done. NO-ONE thinks I should keep it standard

i could`nt agree more the PSS9`s are fantastic and make the standard suspension feel crashy and skip over rough ground .

i have had my rs4 remapped for nearly a year which really makes a difference and it does`nt take long to get used to the extra power plus it shows the limits to the suspension,ARB`s,brakes . i have been in a rs4 with upgraded suspension,ARB`s,brakes plus remap and full milltek and it makes my car feel like a boat .the b5 rs4 can be improved soo much, spend about 6k max and your have a fantastic rs4 that can handle like any modern M,AMG,RS high powered car .
