I had had the Rocker gaskets and covers changed about 5 months ago, and after they were changed there was a smell of burning oil, i took it back and hey told me it was just a bit of oil stuck somewhere and it would soon burn off and the smell would go, 5 months later and i can still smell it and its driving me mad. Can anyone advise me somewhere near Southampton that would be able to sort this problem out, preferably somewhere with a decent reputation probably have to take everything out to get the the Rocker covers to check if they are leaking, but i'll be damned if im taking it back to the place that originally did it for me coz they're useless bunch of monkeys.

Any advice would be appreciated

The company who replaced the gaskets should of either steam cleaned or used some other cleaner to get rid of the oil escaping from the block, therefore shine a torch into the engine bay where the gaskets are and have a look to see if any further oil has escaped – or look underneath the car. This should give you an idea if they're still leaking!

If they haven't cleaned the previous oil away they are correct in what they say!

Cheers rhunter, i dont think they did clean it afterwards, or they did a crap job of it and i cant see any signs of it dripping oil underneath, but after a 30 - 40 minute trip u can smell something burning & see smoke/vapour coming from bonnet which seems to fade when engine is off, surely they can not be a patch of oil just stuck somewhere waiting to be burnt off after 5 months and considering the car is pretty much used everyday.

The oil will take a long time to burn away hence the need for the clean.

If you can see smoke/vapour I would get it checked. My local garage changed the rocker cover gaskets but I could still smell oil after 5k, therefore booked the car into MRC, they had to change some more cover gaskets plus the top half of the engine, but that's another story!!!!

It does sound as though you have another leak.

If they did the rocker cover gaskets then it will be the VVT actuator seals that need changing, nearside head at the back, offside head at the front. Its a metal gasket, core plug and rubber bung that seal the actuator to the heads that needs changing. Its a big job, but im pretty sure can be done from the top of the engine without removing the cambelt if you have the correct tools. Take it to someone who knows what they are doing......

Personally, I request my car to be in A1 working order - even if I have to empty the piggy bank!!!

I'm booked in for tomorrow with MRC to have a service and to find the source of the smell of burning oil.

I know what you mean rhunter, its all about piece of mind, what you spend now could save you big bucks in the future, but the misses wasnt too happy when i told her i'd have to put her on the game to cover it.

depends where you live Nastypsychoboy - MRC are based in Banbury, APS are in Brackley and Unit 20 in Liverpool. All good garages.

i had this problem on mine when i first got it. Cam cover gaskets replaced 2 times by Audi but still same problem with smell/smoke. In the end it was the VVT gaskets. I got a guy on tyresmoke.net, (everyone that has used him reccomends him) to come round my house and replace them and camcover gaskets and i havnt had a problem since.
