Rear springs

My car has just returned from the Stealers after its 80k cam belt change and full service
What worries me (as well as the bill) is that I had a broken rear spring - which to be fair they contacted me about and have replaced the pair.
The broken spring was on the rear nearside and a piece approx 60mm long had broken off the end (it was still in the cup)
I was totally unaware of this and the car behaved "normally"
My questions are
Is this common?
Why did it happen?
Was it dangerous or VERY DANGEROUS?
If it is common - should it be the subject of a recall?

I have changed a few, the failure is often in the same place as yours, the top part of the coil.
The rear spring is around £75 ea and about a hours work per side to change.

I had this too - quite common I think. I also have not noticed any difference between a broken spring and and a new one. The car still sits quite low at the back with th new springs on. I changed it pronto cos I was off to Europe.

Same here. One broken, both replaced, couldn't tell the difference.

And the same for me too. Last time it was at MRC a few months back they spotted a broken spring so replaced them both. I'm guessing that it's a combination of the age of the car, dreadful roads and speedbumps.

Yep seems to be common on the RS4.
Also quite common on all other makes of cars these days. Merc's are notorious for this especially the A-Class rear ones, and also E-class fronts. Must be the cost cutting!

My S4 Avant currently has the same problem on both rear springs, although it is the lower coil on each which has fractured off.

yeah its really common on all audi`s ,i change loads of em,the powder coating splits or wears away then water gets in corrosion takes place then a hole or a speed bump and thats it pal

Can only add that it happened to mine- rear O/S - noticed in June when I upgraded the brakes- last 60mm or so and again still in the cup- fracture was difficult to see- MOT boys didn't spot it either!- was going to do the suspension later in the year so simply brought it forward- drove around for a couple of weeks before the Bilsteins showed up- no problems.
