1. the tick over sometimes miss's a little and so i thought i would use a vag com to find the problem, but i have been told that the vag com won't work on my car is this true?
2. when i change gear(any gear) i get a slight thump from the back of the car (like the rear diff is moving) any common fault i should look for?
3. when does this big grin go away?

Welcome to the fold mate.
1.Vagcom will work chose the correct type though.
2.The clunk as such can be cured by fitting a DTS(do a serach on this)
3.The smile gets bigger when you mod

Where are you based? I have VAG com and can make some readings for you if you need.

Hi saf, good to see you on here finally! r33 v-spec on the GTR board
VAG-COM should work, maybe to do with the lead.
As people have said clunk is quite normal, and you soon adapt to it, and make it less!

Mine misses on idle, I asked Doug about it last time I was at MRC and apparently they all do it, so I shouldn't worry about any of the issues you have at the mo. Be good to get it scanned for DTC's just in case though.

By 'misses' you mean misfires slightly? Mine does this on idle, I get the occasional shiver felt through the car and the idle slightly wobbles between 750 and 800 rpm. Had new plugs at MRC in July but does not seem to have cured it. Are you sure it's nothing to worry about - I keep reading on here about worn camshafts and misfires being a sign of this???

As long as its a genuine VAG-COM USB cable, it can be used on the B5
You can log realtime misfires on idle, by opening blocks 15 (Cylinders 1-3) + 16 (Cylinders 4-6) in VAG-COM's "Measuring Blocks".
Mines does sporadically also, and I've done loads of maintenance to the engine.

My idle is smoother with V power, than it is with Tesco 99

I'm not convinced the V-Power up here is up to scratch, but I may try a tank in the near future and see if I notice any idling differences then.
