My wife confessed to me this mornning that she had "clipped" the kerb while driving the RS yesterday . Doesn't seem to be any damage to the alloy, but there is a bulge in the sidewall of the F1 Assym on that side about the size of a small egg.

Is this serious - does the tyre need changing? This set or tyres has done about 4,000 miles so will I need to change a pair?

I would replace it regardless - not worth taking the risk.

The sidewall's damaged, so agree its safer to change.

Not sure if 4k difference would be that noticable, but if your spare has a new tyre I'd be tempted to swap that with the worn good one to make up the pair on that axle.

Audi advise that a difference of >3mm on each corner of the axle requires both changing.
As you get 8mm with a new tyre, and yours having done only 4K miles, I would assume that they have not worn down to <5mm.
However, this is Audi's guidance - personally, I'd replace both.

change both then keep the good one in the garage for next time she does it then you wont need to buy any

Cheers guys - for pottering around London I guess it's ok for now. Will change them asap and it gives me a chance to replace the other tyre at the same time that she tore chunks out of the sidewall of when the tyres were 200miles old...

Now where's autotrader ?....... must buy oilburner hatchback...

You've got a damaged sidewall...replace it now! "Pottering around London", you could hit 40mph or even 50mph and if the tyre clips an object you may end up with a blowout because of the weakened sidewall. Could well be an excuse for an insurance company not to payout. Besides, if you are doing 50 and someone is coming the other way at 50 and your blowout causes you to collide with the other car, well that's a closing speed of 100mph. It ain't gonna be pretty.

He's got a point...

Yep, get that wheel off straight away and put the spare on until you can get a new tyre. Damaged sidewall = totally unserviceable (stuffed)

Search for a deep pothole in London, denounce it to the municipality and the Insurance Company should replace you the damaged tyre.

Asking 1200Euro/year of road-tax is FRAUD. (And in Italy i pay that money for my RS).
