Question for the panel

Hi all
been away a while but back now...
My question is this - over the last few weeks the RS4's front fan has been going for at least 5-10 mins after I have turned off the ignition. It doesn't matter whether it has been on a long run or only been out for 5 mins, it happens every time now. Oil and water temps are reading normal.
Vag com throws up an intermittent code about 1 of the temp sensor, but all others are ok.
So what's going on? Is it this sensor or have the electrics finally got a gremlin?
Any advice gratefully received
Thanks
H.

Sounds like the after run sensor isn't working, hence why the fan is running even when cold. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Hethers,
do you have the after run mod and if you don't know for sure, did the fan used to run on after the ignition was turned off, when the engine was warm?
If the sensor throws a fault, replace it!
Wanna post the fault code for our delectation?

If its the temp sensor, then it should be something like G62 if memory serves me right.
Doubt very much it would be the after run sensor.

never heard of the after run mod, and no prior to this I don't remember ever hearing this fan run on even when warm.
I'll get the code and post it.

Definatley something to do with the after-run pump sensor - try disconnecting it and see if it stops it coming on.
BTW, it is designed to come on if the oil temp is hot enough after a hard run - maybe your oil / filter is due a change?

here is the fault list:
17840 - Secondary Air Injection Solenoid Valve (N112): Open Circuit
P1432 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16501 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Signal too Low
P0117 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Nige - how do I disconnect this sensor? And oil/filter changed by Doug only a couple of months ago.

Should've posted this first - looks like a faulty temp sensor (G62) is causing the after-run pump to come on.
The G62 is a common problem - the sensor was upgraded a while back - replace this item first as it's only around £11.

As I said before, it would more than likely be the temp sensor.
If its a black one, then that definitely needs to be replaced to the newer green item.

i deliberately shorted my temp sensor so this would happen its commonly known as the "poverty afterrun mod" designed for people like me with no cash. the aux electric water pump and fan will run for 10 mins once the engine has been turned off regardless of how long its been running or how hot it is and pump water round the engine and turbos. imo leave it as it is unless yer battery is on its way out then your car wont start. if thats the case always park it on a hill and make sure no-one is going to park in front of you( have you ever tried pushing one of these).jb

so it's a cheap way of protecting yr turbos and engine in case you (or YTS boy at Listers) don't let them cool down sufficiently?

yes but it only circulates water round the turbos. not oil

Just to clarify this, Jimbo would've shorted out his after-run sensor, not his G62 water temp sensor! The different after-run sensor and new clip is only around £20, but this does takes it's toll on your battery unless its A1.

So basically, if you're thinking of doing the after-run mod, you should include a new battery as well, for safe measures?
