If so can you give me some tips please - particularly interested on how you dropped the box off - engine/Box out or does the box come off easily. How did you manouvere it - cradle? Did you move engine on mountings? I assume its rather heavy with the transfer box fitted.

Any tips would be useful - I will photograph a step by step when I do it for the site .

Thanks

Brent

quickest way is engine out, first time I took the engine out on v6 biturb it took 4 times as long because the bolts on the gearbox are so difficult to get to, not to mention how annoying reaching for sensors etc is

mmm - thanks thought that might be he answer .....:-(

How did you do it after the first time - are the gearbox bolts you metioned just hard to get to or hard to get to if you leave the engine in? Any recommended lessons and how much long does it take do you recon?

Thanks again

Brent

I have done it always by removing the engine with the gearbox.

Fastest time has been around 11 hours with S4.

Don't take the engine out !!!! It's a piece of cake. Box is not that bad at all.

Do not remove the engine.
Gearbox out and takes about 6-8hrs max.
Hardest part is the gearbox support arms.

I helped do it on my A4 and I am sure the RS4 one is not that differen.

Some of the bolts were fiddly but the DTS comes in handy for supporting the box once it was all undone.

Mating the box back up took a while also as it did not want to go back together straight at first.

take the snub mount off and raise the front of the enginr this will help you get the bolts at the top of the bell housing

I did my S2 clutch (g/box out method, was too scottish to lose a/c gas!) a couple of years ago & by f**k! that box is heavy!
If I remember rightly the hardest thing was getting the box past the downpipes. Could have removed them but I hate exhausts!
Took 2 of us about 6 hours. Probably easier than RS4 tho despite the procon ten.

Top tip: make sure you have a hydraulic cradle!

I've just done the clutch on an S4. My procedure was as follows:

I unbolted the subframe at the rear, catalysts-to-exhaust, prop and driveshafts.
The rear dropped low enough to get to ALL the bellhousing bolts, from underneath (I use a lift).
I undid the crank sensor, and hung it out of the way, unbolted the selector rod and stabiliser.
I removed the single bolt holding the clutch slave cylinder in place, and cable tied it to one side.
Lastly, I unbolted the 2 tranny through bolts from the subframe, and removed both brackets themselves from the tranny.
At this point, I unbolted all the bellhousing bolts, using an air gun and long extension for the uppermost ones, leaving the top most centre one till last, supporting the tranny with a transmission stand.

I then rocked the tranny free from the engine. It helps if you have an assistant to help pull the catalyst on the driver's side towards the outside of the car - not too hard though, else you'll damage the flexi section. If you have no assistance, then you can use cable ties / rope to tie both catalysts away from the tunnel, and pull the box off.

From start to finish, it took me 6.5 hours.
