What Mods

Post by superfly » Sat Apr 26, 2008 12:23 am

This is probably a question that has been asked hundreds of times before but after trauling through all the comments on the forum i have been left more confused than i was before i started. I am the very proud owner of a 2001 Monaro Red RS4 which has been in my clutches for the past 18 months. When i bought it the car had covered 86000 miles but i have done alot of playing and now it is showing 104000. I have done a few small mods such as air filter and a pair of Bailey recircs but up to now that is where it has stopped.
I have recently bought a Golf mk2 valver to get to and from work which has left the RS4 as more of a weekend toy. With all the money i am saving on fuel it gives me license to chuck a few grand at the Audi(thats my excuse and i'm sticking to it). I have ordered my H&R anti roll bars as it seems a must but am stuck on what suspension to plump for. I am fortunate enough to know somebody in the trade who can get me a good deal on the KW Variant 3's but am fearful that if purchased i will be disappointed. I originally wanted the PSS9's but with the KW's using Bilstein dampers is there a great deal of difference. I also liked the idea of stainless bodies on the KW's which has got to be better than the anodised alternatives.
In addition i have put alot of thought to a Milltek as it seems it is another must have but being the bargain hunter i am it would be nice to find a company who was willing to give a little on the price of the full system with the sports cats. I am concerned of the exhaust hanging low on the car as where i live has the monopoly on speed bumps.
I would appreciate any input on the above issues as alot of you already have these mods and know there weaknesses.

what air filter are you using? as for baileys HMMMMMMMM I had brand new apr r1's they did not help that much i have a post about it in the s4/b5 section, 710n's seem to be the best so far and alot cheaper. Both PSS9's and KW3'S are good. As for miltek good exhuast try MRC or PW motorsport to see ehat they can do for you.

hope that helps.

Yes - the milltek touches VERY early - this is the main reason I went for Koni dampers, as I couldn't risk lowering the car any further than stock and ruining a couple of grand of exhaust!

are there any suspension setups out there that is close to oem that wont mean your milltek gets bashed?

my milltek is getting bashed a fair bit and i am still on oem suspension.

i frequent speed bumps and shopping mall carparks a lot.

Speak to N11LS_J on here who has recently fitted a PSS9 kit.

Went for a ride in it yesterday, and was very impressed. It's quite a bit lower than stock, but rides really well, and even on the softest setting, it handles absolutely beautifully.

Like I said his is sat pretty low, so the CAT's do catch now and again, but like i said its much lower than stock.

Yep got the PSS9 kit fitted a couple of weeks ago, cannot fault this setup one bit, the ride quality is superb, handles like it's on rails, even though it's on the softest setting, my car is sitting quite low, but i am absolutely amazed with the ride quality, i find it to be the same if not better than stock even at the current height. See pics, I have sing raised the car by about 10mm all round since the pics were taken, this was purely due to the fact that the CATs were catching on speed bumps, now sitting just right, really filled the arches, with 5mm spacers all round. Went for a spin today with a few mates, drove on various roads, over numerous bumps with minimal problems. Very happy with the kit and the smile when driving the RS is now bigger than ever before!

Can't really comment on the KWs but I can say that you will not be disappointed with the PSS9s, think the drive yesterday helped Virdee realise that PSS9 was the way forward!!!

Firstly thanks for all the input, although i am more undecided now than i was before. To answer the question about my air filter it is a K&N 57i kit. I bought it at the right price off ebay and to be honest i am quite pleased with it. It doesn't give off any more induction noise than the standard air box until your really on chat and then it isn't overwhelming.
I have been seriously contemplating what suspension to buy and have decided to go with the variant 3's more for cost than any other reason. I also liked the stainless steel body of this package as it should make adjustment easier later on in the life of the suspension.

Monaro red?. Do you mean Misano Red?
First thing is to get something made to islolate your air filter from the warm air in the engine bay. personally i'd spend money on a brake upgrade. A B7 owner drove my B5 RS4, and he described the brakes as, <beep>!. Then think about arb's (i'm looking at Hotchkis) before dampers and then a remap.

Just my 2p
