Brakes AP Racing vs. RS6 Upgrade

I have made my mind up to upgrade the brakes now I just need to decide... Do I go for the AP Racing 6 pots or do I upgrade with the RS6 calipers...?

All thoughts welcome as I think both are going to set me back between 1500-2000... I guess its only money!!!!

RS6 calipers are by no means an upgrade IMHO mate, they are just poo, no better than oem apart for show only - go AP or better still Brembo (aka big Porsche reds) if you can find some second hand from the GT3Cup racing teams, plenty about - they are the bollox for the front. Go AP or Brembo 4 pots for the rear.

If you go the AP route, make sure you buy the floating discs - standard fixed discs wobble like hell - I know, I still have them - or as Andy say's go to Guido and get the Mov-it setup.

Unless you are into serious trackdays, rears are all show.

http://www.oettinger.de/index2_e.htm .....got theses fitted to mine and am very happy with em ... got a feeling they maybe rebadged porche/movits cuz the guy i got them from say there the same as fitted to the porche 996 turbo .. but the look the nuts and work briliantly !!

Cossy - have you got the floating fronts? do you get any vibrations from them?

There have been so many reports of viobrations, discs cracking etc.. on both AP and the Movits, I would steer away from them both unless you can get a good report from several owners who have them fitted.

The RS6 calipers are by no means 'for show' and for a mere £675 (they have gone up recently tho) for both calipers and OEM pads (using std B5 RS4 discs) are an excellent upgrade for fast road and occasional track users. You will have NO brake worries or noises, or vibrations with this setup on the road.

For the record Andiroo, the RS6 caliper is made by Brembo and is also used on the B7 RS4 and the latest Lambos.

Look at the bottom picture on my post, that is the floating fronts. They don't use the conventional floating way like I have on my Cossy's i.e. with bobbins, but they use those little strips that expand and contract with the heat. Full floating, no wobbling or vibrating at all.
Another option is Hi-spec that I sell. Audi RS4 kit 360mm 6 pots from £1600 with some braided lines and proper brake fluid SRF, RBF etc will be awesome too.

Have to agree to disagree on this one mate :wink: The latest Lambos cook their pads at every trackday I've seen Nige. Don't get me wrong, the RS6 calipers are good, but as an 'upgrade' from oem - no way IMHO. The pad surface area is just too small to take them seriously as an 'upgrade'.

I do agree on the AP's and Movits though, they are not as poo as the RS6 calipers, but still have issues, and as Imax is looking at cost effectiveness these could be the way.

Ultimately as I said go for the Posche big reds (which are not Movits btw), which as we know from our discussions years ago are the Brembos manufactured for Porsche with more exacting tolerances on both calipers and discs - never had one single problem with these on either the RS4 (Sportecs) or on the 996Cup, road or track.

Have to say the 6 pot AP conversion is the only way to go, with the new floating disks, there is no problem at all with vibrations or fade, at Xmas trackday last year I went round all sesions, and not once did the brakes complain.

Simon, how much are the floating disc's, do I need new bells as well? and will they swap straight over from my "solid disc" AP setup, Clare keeps complaining about the vibe's now we only have one UK car!

Ah, young Ken has bailed out of France, how are you matey...
As far as I know, you will have to change bells and discs, but a call to AP is well worth it, having spoken to the development guys there
they may well do you a 'deal' as the problems of the solid mounted discs are well known.

Thanks this makes some interesting reading. By chance I do have a set of Boxster S Red calipers that I wanted to get fitted to my RS4. I aksed a couple of people about it but the fixings differ and I would need some type of bracket?? It all started getting very complicated and that is why I am looking at the other options.

The Porsche calipers I have are virtually new so if I could fix them to my car this would be ideal - All assistance gratetfully received.

This is an interesting thread. Andiroo, are you saying that AP six pots and the like have more pad surface area than the 8 pot Brembos? I was under the impression that there was a significant pad surface area on the Bembo's, being that there are two pretty large pads clamped to each side of the disc, which is twice as much as the OEM B5 items. Since upgrading to the B7 setup, I've not had any problems, and than includes several track days and braking hard from 165+ over ten times last Sunday.

After 3 laps of Bedford on the standard setup the brakes were shagged, so, from my experience, I'd have to contradict what you say that the Brembo's are not an upgrade and are poo.

OT, @ cossymad, don't go a bundle on the RS4 badge on the triangular piece of trim on the rear door. Is it hiding something?
