ALWAYS blank out your number plates! Help/info needed

Some t**t who isnt fit to drive an RS4 has stolen my cars identity for his.
Got a speeding letter from Manchester police and photo evidence of a Nogaro RS4 doing 51 in a 30 near Salford on Sept 17th.The car in the the photo looks like my car and has the same plates but it isnt my car-its been cloned- I was in bed watching a documentary about the Hindenberg when the offence took place! My car is also a Nogaro blue RS4.
Who knows anyone in the Cheshire area with one? The main bit of evidence i have to show it wasnt me is that the car in the photo has colour coded mirrors - mine has Ally. There can surely be about 10-20 cars in the country this spec as i think most have Ally mirrors.
I know i should have blanked my plates in recent Pistonheads and Autotrader ads but now im guilty until proven innocent.
Will this evidence be sufficient to clear my name and how can i catch this imposter?
Somebody out here must have an idea who this (he's probably reading this!)
Any info and help would be appreciated PM or post

Sorry to hear of your bad luck Sherpa, the car in question will most likely be a ringer..... it is most common that when stolen the gangs stick false plates on bearing the I.D. of a legitimate vehicle of similar spec / colour etc.
If you present your evidence to the local traffic dept I would think it will be dropped. If it was a camera van it will have a detailed picture of the driver of the vehicle.
Fingers crossed for you mate!

do you want to post a partial reg so we can keep an eye out?
have you checked whether it's appeared in spotters forum?
you should be OK if you tell the Police that's it's not yours, where are you based sherpa? It happens a lot in London with the congestion charge.
if the authorities made number plate supply tighter (the 2001 rules improved matters a bit) there wouldn't be a problem - you can get a set made up at a show "for show use" showing no documents.
they know it's not a foolproof system so once they can see it isn't your car they should back off.

Cheers for the replies lads.
The reg is X**3 PEW.
Ive not checked in spotters yet but will do straight away.
Cant believe that im now in a position where i have to go gathering evidence to show it wasnt my car.Ive reported a crime to GM police so i hope ive nipped any more in the bud, but if someone has gone to the trouble of copying plates they will want to use 'em i assume?
Ill just have to wait to see what happens...

You can still easily get plates made from eBay without docs.

hey sherpa sorry to here your about you problem . can you tell me does the offending photo of the car show it with racks fitted to the roof rales ? as i saw a very shabby x reg noggy rs the other day in sheffield which is only half an hour from manc . my dad saw it the day befor and thought it was me ! as i have a noggy rs with alli mirrors. but when i saw it it had roofbars fitted bleu mirrors and very shabby . i will keep my eyes peeled and chek the plate if i see it again ! as i regulary fequent the area where me and my farther spotted it ! us rs owners find it hard enough to keep our own points down with out some <beep> getting points for us !

Might be possible for you to ask for a new registration number without paying for it?

sorry to hear about this sherpa. This sounds so bizarre. I usually blank my reg when posting car pics on forums, but on my recent photo of rear ender i thought it to be ok with an RS. Was thinking who'd clone a noggy blue rs when there's hardly any about. At lease mine has black roof rails, only seen a couple similar to mine.
I live fairly close to manchester, thought it was me for a sec. I'll keep my eye out.
